Betty Aken
July 25, 1928 — February 7, 2018
Betty Lou Aken, daughter of Charles and Laura Esther (Best) Turk, was born July 25, 1928 in Harrison County, Iowa. She graduated from Shelby High School.
On April 6, 1947, Betty was united in marriage to Robert Plagman in Shelby, Iowa. Three children were born to this union: Patricia, Nancy and Robert. Betty stayed at home and raised her children. She spent many hours tending her flower garden. She enjoyed cooking unusual combinations of food for her family and had a passion of dancing. (She would rather dance than eat.) Betty loved helping others and sharing her faith with those around her.
Betty later married Jim Aken on April 8, 2000 in Omaha, Nebraska. They lived in the Council Bluffs/ Omaha area until Jim’s passing in 2007. Betty moved to Elm Crest Independent Living in Harlan. She loved being able to brighten the days of other residents there.
Betty passed away surrounded by her loving family on Wednesday, February 7, 2018 at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, attaining the age of eighty-nine years, six months and thirteen days. In addition to her parents, she was proceeded in death by her husband Jim Aken and grandson Randall Plagman.
She has left to cherish her memory, her children Patricia Schnack of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Nancy Plagman of Des Moines, Iowa; Robert Plagman and his wife Colette of Shelby, Iowa; 9 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren; other family members and many friends.
