Betty Jean Campbell was born on December 29, 1927 to George and Olive (Kees) Hartman in Harlan, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed in the Methodist Church and graduated from Defiance Public School with the Class of 1945.
On June 16, 1945, she was united in marriage to Kenneth Campbell at the First United Methodist Church in Harlan, Iowa. She was a wonderful mother to six children: Kenneth, Judith, David, John, Betty Jean, and Kevin.
Betty delivered the Des Moines Register and Omaha World Herald newspapers for over twenty years, serving as secretary of the Star Route Mail Carriers for approximately ten years. After retiring from delivering papers, she worked part-time for Duane and B. J. Hemminger at the Video Place in Harlan. After the closing of the store, she enjoyed spending more time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Betty died at her home on Wednesday, February 3, 2016 at the age of eighty-eight years, one month, and five days. She was preceded in death by her parents, sons Kenneth and David, daughter Betty Jean Hemminger, and brothers James and Frank Hartman.
She is survived by her children Rev. Judith Piper of Sioux City, Iowa, John Campbell and his wife Susan of Harlan, Iowa, and Kevin Campbell and his wife Lisa of Des Moines, Iowa; fifteen grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; sister Helen Holloway of Irwin, Iowa; other family members and friends.
