Elizabeth “Betty” Jean Henkelman, daughter of Arnold and Annabell Marie (Goeres) Schneider, was born October 2, 1931, in Defiance, Iowa. She attended and graduated from St. Paul’s School in Defiance.
Betty was united in marriage to John Feser on February 25, 1952, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Defiance, Iowa. Four children were born to this union: Mary Ann, Gary, Dale, and Tom. She worked at Norgaard’s in Harlan and at their soda fountain. Betty later married Raymond Henkelman on February 25, 1995, in Las Vegas, Nevada. They made their home in Defiance.
Kind, gentle, graceful, and generous are some words to describe Betty. She loved animals, especially dogs. She was an excellent cook and Sundays were her day to make home cooked meals for her family. She was there to help anyone in need and never complained to do so. She enjoyed sewing and quilting and tending to her flower beds. She could be seen driving in her “Ms. Bette”, making trips to the casino and occasionally enjoying a vodka sour with a cigarette. Most of all, Betty loved time spent with her family and watching it grow throughout the years.
She died on Wednesday, October 12, 2022, at Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa, attaining the age of ninety-one years and ten days. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Ray Henkelman, stepdaughter Debra Underwood, and sister Joyce Ann Schneider.
She survived by her children Mary Ann (Dennis) Anastasi of Defiance, Iowa; Gary (Becky) Feser of Irwin, Iowa; Dale (Lanae) Feser of Waseca, Minnesota; Tom Feser of Denison, Iowa; stepchildren Gregory Henkelman, Gary (Christine) Henkelman, Ronald (Celeste) Henkelman, Bruce (Cynthia) Henkelman, all of Lakeland, Florida; grandchildren Jason Anastasi, Jared Anastasi, Joe Anastasi, Tara Jones; great grandchildren Jaden Anastasi, Zoey Bissen, Alex Anastasi, Aaron Anastasi, Kinze Anastasi, Heidi Anastasi, Eliza Anastasi, Bode Jones, great-great grandchild Emerson Kaputska; other family members and friends.
