Betty Lou Juhl, daughter of Henry and Avanell (Stahl) Swensen, was born February 16, 1928 in Harlan, Iowa. She attended school in Harlan until the eighth grade.
On June 10, 1944, Betty was united in marriage to Robert E. Juhl in San Diego, California. Six children were born to this union: Bill, Wayne, Steve, Shari, Carol and Keith. When the kids were growing up, her and Robert would always plant a large garden. Betty worked on the farm and tended to the garden and do all the canning at the end of the season. They moved off the farm and into Harlan where she candled eggs at Harlan Produce for many years. Later on, she worked as a bar maid and also as a dispatch secretary for National By Products.
Robert and Betty enjoyed the outdoors and loved camping. They had a seasonal spot at Lost Island in Ruthven, Iowa for many years. In the afternoon, they would take drives around Prairie Rose Park and enjoy the scenery and each others company. In Betty’s pass time, she enjoyed embroidery work.
Betty died Saturday, October 22, 2016 surrounded by family at the Avoca Nursing and Rehab Center in Avoca, Iowa, attaining the age of eighty-eight years, eight month and six days. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband; son Keith Juhl; daughter-in-law Lynn Juhl; brother Laverne Swensen and step-sister Gloria Swensen.
She is survived by her children Bill Juhl and his wife Jeanette of Hampton, Virginia; Wayne Juhl and his wife Connie of Portsmouth, Iowa; Steve Juhl of Carter Lake, Iowa; Shari and her husband Mike Mauk of Phillipsburg, Missouri; Carol Wyant of Lebanon, Missouri; 12 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; brother Lloyd Swensen of Aurora, Colorado; nieces and nephews; other family members and friends.
