Elizabeth “Betty” Jean Olson, daughter of Edward and Fern (McCoy) Plambeck was born January 11, 1928 on a farm west of Portsmouth, Iowa in Harrison County. She was baptized and confirmed at the St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa, where she remained a life long member since 1946. While growing up she attended Sunnyside Country School and Hemlock Country School then graduated from Harlan High School with the class of 1945.
On June 19, 1946, Betty was united in marriage to Ole D. Olson. Five children were born to this union: Linda, Patty, Dan, Bob and Don. Betty started out working at Economy Printing in Harlan until 1958 when she went to work cleaning houses and also cooking at the Chicken Hut. In 1973, she became the office manager for Boltinghouse & Associates and continued in that position until retiring in September of 1982.
Betty enjoyed camping and fishing in Kansas and South Dakota. In later years, her and Ole would travel to spend the winter months with Dan in Arizona and in Texas with Bob. She loved attending school functions and sporting activities for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed volunteering her time, with the Myrtue Medical Auxiliary in the gift shop, being a member of the Hemlock Club and St. Michael’s Church Circle.
Betty remained in Harlan until February of 2017, when she moved to Avoca Specialty Care in Avoca, Iowa. She died on May 25, 2017 surrounded by her loving family at the Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan attaining the age of eighty-nine years, four months and fourteen days. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Ole, brother George Plambeck, granddaughter Teri Rose and grandson David Cox.
She has left to cherish her memory, her children Linda Brown of Florence, Alabama; Patty and her husband Allen Cox of Harlan, Iowa; Dan Olson of Harlan, Iowa; Bob Olson of Port Isabelle, Texas; Don Olson of Spirit Lake, Iowa; 14 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; siblings Roberta and her husband John Van Buskirk, Terry Plambeck and his wife Mary, Jolene Plambeck, Alan Plambeck and his wife Teresa all of Council Bluffs, Iowa; other family members and friends.
