Bud Barnes was born September 14, 1918 in Manning, Iowa to Nathaniel and Rose Hagedorn Barnes. He died Monday, September 1, 2008 at Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa, at the age of 89 years, 11 months and 17 days. He spent his childhood in Manning and attended Manning Public Schools. His father Nathaniel died when he was 10. He was working at various odd jobs by the age of 12, in order to support his mother and 2 sisters, including the local service station during the day and driving trucks to Omaha at night. He left for California in the early 1940s and worked in the Long Beach shipyards as a welder until he was drafted into the Army for service in World War II. On November 29, 1942, he married Inez Kathryn Kruse in Long Beach, California. Inez died January 8, 1978. He entered the Army March 23, 1943. He served as a truck driver and ambulance driver in General George Patten?s Third Army in the European Theatre during World War II. His service included landing on Utah Beach approximately 10 days after D-Day. He was discharged from military service January 6, 1946. He was a member of the American Legion Post 8 in Denison for over 50 years. Upon his discharge, he returned to Crawford County, Iowa and worked briefly for his father-in-law Fred Kruse on the farm, planning to return again to California. However, he took a job as a mechanic with Pruett Brothers Implement in Denison, Iowa and never left. He subsequently managed the parts counter for Jahnke Implement in Denison for over 20 years. He then worked on the parts counter for City Auto Parts in Denison until he retired. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith on December 22, 1946 by Rev. C. W. Schmidt at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. He maintained membership in Zion from that point forward. He was active in Zion?s Men?s Club; he played dartball for many years; served on Zion?s Board of Education and was president of the Parent-Teacher League in the 1960s; he was often a greeter for Saturday evening services and served as a "financial counter" for many years. Throughout their married life, Bud and Inez enjoyed camping and traveling. Bud always enjoyed hunting and fishing. Having worked on International Harvester equipment since 1946, he was a walking expert on all things International and Farmall. One of his hobbies was to collect toy International Harvester tractors, with the goal of collecting one of each model he had ever worked on. He also enjoyed baseball at all levels, from Little League through major league, especially when his son Tom was playing. Bud was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Inez, his son Thomas Kent (Tom), who died in July, 1971 at the age of 17, his two sisters, Elaine Frantz and Bernice Hillman, two half brothers, Raymond and Alvin Edwards and a niece, Norma Albright. He is survived by his daughter, Jean and her husband, Delmar C. Warren, II of Liberty, Missouri; his grandson, Carl W. Warren of Spring Hill, Kansas; two nieces, Patricia Hospers and Michelle Hillman, three nephews, Verdean Kruse, Haven Frantz and Jeffrey Hillman, and many, many, friends. Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, September 4, 2008, at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa, with the Rev. Kurt R. Kaiser and the Rev. David M. Sewing officiating. Music for the service was provided by Eldon Hardekopf singing "Take My Hand Precious Lord" and the congregation singing "What A Friend We Have In Jesus", "Lift High The Cross" and "For All The Saints" with Jeanette Venzke serving as organist. Honorary Pallbearers were Albert Hester and Dave McCollough. Pallbearers included Palmer Volkmann, Richard Frank, Louise Galbraith, Candis Denker, Ron Jahn and Lyle Frazier. Military Honors were provided by the American Legion Post 8, Denison, Iowa. Interment was in Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Denison. Following the interment the family invited everyone to return to the church for fellowship and a luncheon prepared and served by Zion?s Ladies Aid.
