Carmen Ann Ratigan was born on June 19, 1922 to John and Gertrude (Muell) Blum in Panama, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary�s of the Assumption Catholic Church in Panama. She attended country school for two years before going to St. Mary�s Catholic School and graduating with the Class of 1941.
On September 18, 1941, Carmen was united in marriage to Francis Ratigan at St. Mary�s Catholic Church. Three children were born to them: Michael, Linda, and Ron.
Carmen raised her children and worked as a housewife before she become employed at Little Flower Haven nursing home in Earling, Iowa. She worked full-time as a nurse�s aide until she retired in 2002 at the age of eighty years old.
Carmen continued to live on the family farm for two years after Francis died in 1980 before moving into Panama. She lived at Elm Crest Retirement Home in Harlan, Iowa. It was at Bethany Lutheran Nursing Home in Council Bluffs, Iowa, that Carmen died on Saturday, October 8, 2011, having attained the age of eighty-nine years, three months, and nineteen days. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and two brothers: Robert and Donald.
Carmen is survived by her children: Michael Ratigan and his wife Therese of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Linda and her husband Ken Baxter of Council Bluffs, and Ron Ratigan and his wife Alice of Panama, Iowa; eight grandchildren: Sheila and her husband Charlie Schwery, Jacque and her husband Tom Liston, Larry Ratigan and his wife Kris, Brian Ratigan and his wife Maura, Justin Baxter, Christina Ratigan and her fianc� Justin Schwery, Michael Ratigan, and David Ratigan; twelve great-grandchildren; sister Delores Wilkinson of Harlan, Iowa; other family members and friends.
Rev. John Dorton celebrated the 10:00 Mass of Christian Burial on Tuesday, October 11, 2011 at St. Mary�s of the Assumption Catholic Church in Panama, Iowa. Honorary casket bearers were Charles Schwery, Thomas Liston, Kris Ratigan, Maura Ratigan, and Justin Schwery. Serving as casket bearers were Sheila Schwery, Michael Ratigan, David Ratigan, Jacque Liston, Larry Ratigan, Brian Ratigan, Justin Baxter, and Christina Ratigan. Interment was held at St. Mary�s Cemetery in Panama, Iowa.
