Carol Ann Brus
February 13, 1941 — April 28, 2018
Carol Ann Brus, daughter of Carl and Hattie (Groth) Slater, was born February 13, 1941 in Denison, Iowa. A farm girl for life, Carol grew up in the country and had a passion for horses. She loved to spend her time riding and attending horse shows. She was baptized and confirmed at United Presbyterian Church in Denison, where she remained a lifetime member. She attended Denison High School.
On March 8, 1959, Carol was united in marriage to Verdell Brus in Denison. Together, they raised three sons: Scott, Jeff and Todd. Carol worked alongside Verdell on the farm, and they loved to attend horse shows, chuck wagon races and travel. Later in life, they had a passion for antiquing and attending auctions. After Verdell’s death, Carol remained involved in farming with her sons, and could often be found on her “tractor” mowing, running for parts (and shopping along the way) or bringing lunch out to the field at harvest.
Family was an important part of Carol’s life, and she loved spending time with her children and grandchildren – sharing her quiet sense of humor, babysitting (spoiling), attending events and going on vacations. Though she never used a measuring spoon, Carol was a great cook – and according to her family, she made the world’s best chili and strawberry shortcake.
Carol was very involved in her church and community. She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church women’s group, where she helped with funeral luncheons, and she worked bingo at the Denison Care Center. She loved spending time with her friends (the girls) at coffee, shopping, or going on other outings – including concerts and fairs. She also enjoyed spending time with her condo community, and was especially grateful for the companionship of Marilyn Weatherman, her close friend and neighbor of over twenty years.
Carol passed away on Saturday, April 28, 2018, at Eventide Retirement Home in Denison at the age of 77 years, 2 months and 15 days. She will be remembered by those close to her as hard working, humble and kind. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Verdell Brus, brothers Robert Slater, Charles Slater, James Slater, George Slater, and sister Maxine Clinton.
Left to honor her memory are her sons: Scott Brus and his wife Carol of Denison; Jeff Brus and his significant other Sherri of Denison; Todd Brus and his wife Tracy of Denison; eight grandchildren; six great grandchildren; sister Florence Kennedy of California; sister-in-law LaJune Magill and her husband Martin of Perry, Iowa; brother-in-law John Knudson of Everest, Kansas; nieces and nephews; other family members and many friends.
