Carol Lee Herbst was born on December 21, 1943 to Alfred and Irma (Zarbeck) Monroe in Grand Rapids, Michigan. She graduated from Godwin Heights High School with the Class of 1960.
In 1962, she joined the United States Army. While stationed in Seattle, Washington, she met Daniel Joseph Herbst. Following her discharge, she moved to Omaha, Nebraska, and baptized and confirmed at St. Cecelia’s Cathedral in Omaha, Nebraska. She was married to Daniel on September 12, 1964 at St. Cecilia Cathedral. They later moved to a farm outside of Panama, Iowa. From their marriage four children were born: Timothy, Elizabeth, Laura and Linda.
Carol enjoyed being a housewife and mother while the children were young. When they were a little older, she went to work at Pamida, West Central, Myrtue Medical Center and WIC in Harlan. She was an excellent pie maker, homemaker, wife, mother, grandmother and friend.
She was a member of St. Mary’s of the Assumption Catholic Church in Panama where she served on the liturgy committee. She was a member of the Panama American Legion Post No. 601. She was devoted to her religion.
After a brief illness, Carol died at her home on Sunday, May 18, 2014 having attained the age of seventy years, four months, and twenty-seven days. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Carol is survived by her husband of forty-nine years Daniel Herbst of Panama, Iowa; her children: Timothy Herbst and his wife Kristi of Harlan, Iowa, Elizabeth and her husband Paul Bencker, Sr. of Bennington, Nebraska, Laura Herbst of Urbandale, Iowa, and Linda and her husband Walter Ney of Sheridan, Indiana; ten grandsons: Paul Bencker Jr., Evan Bencker, Joshua Schmitz, Justin Schmitz, Colin Bencker, Cameron Ney, Carson Ney, Caden Herbst, Trevor Herbst and Gavin Herbst; her sisters: Doris Todd, Phyllis Slater, Barb Weeks, and brother: Marvin Monroe, all from Michigan; many brothers-in-law; sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and many friends.
