Carol Kristine Hopp, daughter of Horace and Rose (Johnson) Petersen, was born on November 9, 1929 in rural Harlan, Iowa. She attended Jackson Township No. 1 rural school through the eighth grade and then Harlan High School where she graduated with the class of 1948.
On July 6, 1948, Carol was united in marriage to Donald Arthur Hopp. To this union, four children were born: Cynthia, Larry, Gary and Kristie. In the early years of their marriage Carol helped with milking cows for Hopp’s Dairy. In 1952, together with Don’s parents, the couple purchased a dozer and began soil conservation work. This dozer purchase was the start of their business which became known as Hopp Construction Company. Over the years the business evolved into road construction projects in southwest Iowa and grading work for the development of various additions to the City of Harlan. Carol was instrumental in the business as the company’s bookkeeper as well as a strong supporter of Don. Over the years she also worked as a bookkeeper for The Holiday Buffet and Harlan Feed Service. Carol was a licensed insurance agent for a number of years with crop hail business being a favorite for her. She often enjoyed meeting with her customers and chatting over a cup of coffee.
Carol grew up attending the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Jacksonville, Iowa. She and Don were members of the Congregational United Church of Christ in Harlan.
Carol and Don enjoyed attending their children and grandchildren’s school activities and sporting events. They continued to be regular supporters of Harlan Cyclone athletic events. Go-cart and stock car racing events were a long-time activity for the couple as they followed their children and grandchildren in the races. Carol loved family gatherings and spending time with her children and grandchildren. She also enjoyed having coffee, playing cards and visiting with family and friends. When guests arrived at their home, Carol was a gracious host making sure to offer a cup of coffee and something to eat. Christmas gatherings were always a very special time for Carol when she loved hosting a delicious meal for all her children and their families. Tea parties with her granddaughters were also very special to her.
Carol made her home with Don in rural Harlan for nearly 65 years. In 2013 Carol and Don moved to the Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn.
