Carolyn Ann Campbell Mayne Christensen was born on March 1, 1935 to Floyd and Thelma (Pulver) Campbell in Harlan, Iowa. The oldest of four siblings, Carolyn spent the majority of her childhood in the rural areas around Kirkman, Iowa.
An enthusiastic student, she enjoyed art, band, and girls basketball. During high school, her family moved and she transferred to Harlan High School where she graduated in 1952.
Following graduation, Carolyn worked at Farner’s Department Store until her marriage to John Mayne on November 21, 1954. Until 1971, Carolyn was a homemaker, raising her four children. She was an active supporter of their involvement in 4-H, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, and band. She served as leader of the harlan Hi Stars 4-H Club for a number of years.
As her marriage to John ended, she began working at Myrtue Medical Center as a ward clerk. During the latter years of her nearly three-decade-long employment, she became a clerk in medical records.
On September, 9, 1978, Carolyn married Gary Christensen. They lived in Harlan and briefly in Kirkman before the marriage ended in 1982.
After Carolyn retired in 2000, she spent more time doing the things she liked: traveling with her friends and family, gardening, sewing, and enjoying the company of her two cats, Tom and Blue. She enjoyed the Food Channel, having Sunday breakfast with friends, and "wearing purple" as much as possible.
Carolyn lost her battle with cancer on August 13, 2010, at Elm Crest Retirement Community, having attained the age of seventy-five years, five months, and twelve days. She was preceded in death by her parents, her former spouses, John Mayne and Gary Christensen, her daughter Peggy Mayne, brother Richard "Dick" Campbell, and sister Janie (Margaret Jane) Johnson. Also preceding her in death are her canine companion Zsa Zsa and feline friends Blue and Tom.
Carolyn is survived by her daughter Kathleen Mayne and her spouse Dianne Hamilton of San Diego, California; her sons: Gregory Mayne and his fiancee Linda Menton of Waterloo, Iowa and Jeffrey Mayne and his friend Donna Gessert of Harlan, Iowa; three grandchildren: Stephanie Mayne-Krofton and her husband Nathan of Norfolk, Virginia, and Ian and Elizabeth Mayne of Waterloo; step-grandchild Caleb Westberg of Berkeley, California; brother Larry Campbell and his ex-wife Joan Campbell of Toledo, Iowa; sister-in-law Louella Campbell of Loveland, Colorado; brother-in-law James Johnson of Boulder, Colorado; other family members and friends.
