Catherine Buman Schomers
March 13, 1931 — February 16, 2014
Catherine Emma Reinig was born to August and Mary (Kenkel) Reinig on March 13, 1931. She was united in marriage to Ralph Buman in 1954 on September 6th. Ralph and Catherine were blessed with six children: Anne, Jim, Sharon, Paul, Larry and Susie. Catherine happily spent most of her life as a homemaker, housewife and loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.
Preceding Catherine in death are her husband Ralph in 1977, daughter Anne Swierczek in 1982, husband Alf Schomers in 1992, sister Rita Ohlinger in 2005, Rita’s husband John in 2002, sister Theresa Krupicka in 2013, Theresa’s husband Bob in 2007, brothers Bob in 2005 and Alfred in 2010, and brothers-in-law Jack Slaven and Tom Tunnell, both in 1998.
Survivors include her children and spouses: Jim and Dianne Buman of Harlan, Sharon and Mike Coenen of Defiance, Paul and Ann Buman of Portsmouth, Larry Buman of Council Bluffs, and Susie and Dennis Schwery of Panama; seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren; her sisters Mary Slaven of Portsmouth and Cecelia Tunnell of California, brothers and spouses Tony and Mildred Reinig of Harlan, Joe and Arlene Reinig of Portsmouth, Alvin and Millie Reinig of Harlan and Don and Joyce Reinig of Oregon; sisters-in-law Virginia Reinig of Portsmouth, Betty Reinig of Kansas; many nieces and nephews. Her stepchildren include Jerry and Pat Schomers of Omaha, Don and Judy Schomers of Westphalia, Ted and Shirley Herbst of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Dave and Rose Schomers of Westphalia, Nancy and Greg Thrasker of Omaha, Mary and Craig Rasmussen of Cincinnati, Ohio, Linda and Jim Gidley, Randy and Lisa Schomers, Bill and Tracy Schomers all of Omaha, and Julie and Curt Andersen of Waukesha, Wisconsin; thirty step-grandchildren and many step great grandchildren.
Celebrant Rev. John Dorton with Concelebrants Rev. John Frost and Rev. Donald Bruck officiated the 10:30 AM funeral service on Saturday, February 22, 2014 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Portsmouth, Iowa. Honorary casket bearer was Joe Buman. Inurnment was held at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Portsmouth.
