Catherine "Peggy" Estella Schwarte, daughter of Henry and Cecelia (Mueller) Kaufman, was born on March 7, 1934, in Earling, Iowa. She was one of ten children. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph�s Catholic Church in Earling and graduated from St. Joseph�s Catholic School in Earling.
On April 10, 1956, Peggy was united in marriage to Martin "Mert" A. Schwarte at St. Joseph�s Catholic Church in Earling.. Three children were born to this union: Randall, Wayne, and Mary Lea. After their wedding, the couple made their home in Shelby County and Peggy worked at Tinsley�s Jewelry Store in Harlan for several years before becoming a caretaker at Regal Towels with Mert in Council Bluffs for nine years.
Peggy was a loving person and always wanted to help others. She took care of the elderly in their homes by doing laundry, cooking, and cleaning for them. When Peggy wasn�t busy working, she loved to spend time with her family. She was always there for them, especially for her loving, generous, and kind husband, Mert.
Peggy died on Thursday, February 12, 2009, at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa, having attained the age of seventy-four years, eleven months, and five days. She is preceded in death by her parents; her siblings: Joe Kaufman, Frank Kaufman, Mary Mundt, Helen Reinig, Louis Kaufman, Genevieve Weller, and Therese Fromm.
She is survived by her husband Mert Schwarte of Harlan, their children: Randy Schwarte and his wife Mona of Westphalia, Iowa; Wayne Schwarte of Harlan; and Mary Lea and her husband Randy Booth of Westphalia; ten grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; her brother Mike Kaufman of Omaha, Nebraska; her sister-in-law Vivian Kaufman of Woodbine, Iowa; her brother-in-law Gordon Weller of Westside, Iowa; nieces; nephews; other family members and many friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday, February 16, 2009, at St. Michael�s Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa. Rev. Bob Hoefler celebrated the 11:00 AM service.
