Douglas Patrick Kiem was born on February 8, 1965 to Robert and Letty (Lee) Kiem in Jacksonville, Florida. He was baptized at the Disciples of Christ Church in Jacksonville and graduated from Orange Park High School with the Class of 1983. He was in the Naval ROTC program at the University of Florida, becoming active duty Navy on May 2, 1987.
On August 6, 1988, Doug was united in marriage to Angie Shannon in Corpus Christi, Texas. They became parents to three children: Nicole, Robert, and Candace.
He had flight training at the Naval Air Station in Pensacola earning his wings in 1988. He received additional flight training in San Diego before being stationed in Japan, serving as a helicopter pilot on the USS Midway. Twenty-four years later, Doug retired on August 31, 2011 from that same ship and moved to Irwin, Iowa. He most recently flew as an independent contractor in Afghanistan and Africa until July of 2015.
Doug died on Thursday, October 22, 2015 at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska, at the age of fifty years, eight months, and fourteen days. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert.
Doug is survived by his wife Angie Kiem of Irwin, Iowa; children: Nicole Kiem and her fiancé Jonathan Burkett of San Diego, California, Robert Kiem of Jacksonville, Florida, and Candace Kiem of San Diego; his mother, Letty Kiem of Orange Park, Florida; sisters Beth and her husband Keith Schemenauer of Stuart, Florida and Katie and her husband Dennis Seslar of Boca Raton, Florida; other family members and many friends.
