Charles Ray “Chub” Walter
Charles Ray “Chub” Walter, son of Clarence and Ethel (Wehland) Walter, was born on May 17, 1940 in Walnut, Iowa. He attended school in Walnut and graduated from Walnut High School with the class of 1957.
During his high school years and after graduation, Charles worked at a service station in Walnut. At the age of twenty-one, he started his own business when he bought a fuel oil, gas and diesel tank wagon serving local farmers. Charles then went into the fertilizer business and owned Walnut Creek Fertilizer in Walnut, Iowa for many years.
On November 4, 1960, Charles was united in marriage with Gloria Kays at the First Presbyterian Church in Walnut, Iowa. Charles met Gloria while she was working at the Parkway Drive-In Restaurant in Avoca. To this union a daughter, Joanie was born. Charles was a long time member of the First Presbyterian Church in Walnut where he served as an elder and volunteered through the years. Chub was also a member of the Walnut Volunteer Fire Department and drove school bus for the Walnut Community Schools for many years. He loved the children on his route and treated them monthly with donuts from the Walnut Bakery.
In 2001, he retired and remained in Walnut until due to health issues he became a resident of Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn, Iowa. This is where Charles died on October 9, 2015 attaining the age of seventy-five years, four months and twenty-two days. In addition to his parents, Charles is preceded in death by his sisters Clara Ginn, Dorothy Corey and Mary Paulsen; and his brother Robert Walter.
He is survived by his wife Gloria Walter of Walnut, Iowa; his daughter Joanie and her husband Glen Rodgers of Walnut; his brother Donald Walter and his wife Jo Jane of Walnut; his sister Marjorie Caster of Ottumwa, Iowa; his brother James Walter and his wife Beverly of Atlantic, Iowa; nieces and nephews, other family members and many friends.
