Charles Galen Grabill, son of Gale and Martha (Ericksen) Grabill was born on February 6, 1932 on a farm east of Harlan. Charles attended Center Township Country School and graduated in 1950 from the Harlan High School.
On August 14, 1950 Charles married Twyla Plagmann at the Little Brown Church in the Vale at Nashua, Iowa. They lived on on a farm south of Harlan for a short time, then moved to their present farm where they raised their two children, Gayl and Galen, and farmed for over sixty-seven years. Charles and Twyla were married 71 years.
Charles loved tending to his apple trees and watermelon patch and sharing them with friends and family. Charles enjoyed hunting and trapping fox, coyote, and racoon. Every year, a favorite source of entertainment was watching a fox with her pups playing out near his barn. Charles loved watching his son Galen and grandson Charles race at the Shelby County Speedway. His grandchildren and great grandchildren brought him great joy. Charles’ face would light up when they were around him. Charles and Twyla enjoyed their retirement home on Lake Okoboji, where Charles would spend hours tinkering in his boathouse. Farming was near and dear to his heart. Even after retirement Charles spent much time fixing things in his shop and watching his family plant and harvest their fields. He loved to sit on his deck, watching the crops and taking in the farm scenery. He enjoyed checking on the cows and calves, and was still asking about them just a few days before he passed.
Following a brief stay at Salem Lutheran Home Charles passed away on March 12, 2022 at the Myrtue Medical Center. He was preceded in death by his parents Gale and Martha Grabill, and two brothers Donald and Johnny Grabill.
Charles is survived by his wife Twyla of Salem Lutheran Home Elk Horn, IA; daughter Gayl (Dalton) Jensen of Harlan, IA; son Galen (Donna) Grabill of Harlan, IA; six grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; sister LaDonna (Jack) Noble of Opopka, FL and sister-in-law Bonnie Grabill of Harlan, IA.
