Charles “Charlie” Richard Ronnfeldt was born on May 18, 1944 in Des Moines, Iowa. He was the long awaited baby that Carl and Marianne (Nelson) Ronnfeldt had been longing for and was adopted through Lutheran Social Services aided by Pastor Joseph Gerlt of the Lutheran Church in Avoca.
He was an only child but was fortunate to have grown up in a large extended family of Ronnfeldt’s and Lippold’s and a group of neighborhood guys who have remained life long friends.
Charlie was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church having been baptized and confirmed there. He attended school in Avoca and graduated with the Avo-Ha Class of 1962. Charlie went to barber school in Omaha, and worked in Des Moines for several years before returning to his hometown and opening his barber shop on Main Street. In 2016, he was honored in the annual 4th of July parade for being in business for 50 years.
In 1967, Charlie married Susan Scheffler at Trinity Lutheran Church in Avoca and then in 1979 they became the proud parents of twin daughters, Erin and Kara.
Charlie was so proud of his daughters and granddaughters and loved following their activities. He was a dedicated follower of AHSTW football and never missed a game. He was also a loyal Iowa Hawkeyes fan and enjoyed following the Nebraska Cornhuskers and was looking forward to the coming season for both teams. Charlie was a member of Ducks Unlimited and Pheasants Forever. His interests were many with duck hunting topping the list. He loved to pheasant hunt with his father-in-law and in later years preferred to sit in the blind and enjoy all of the wildlife around the pond rather than hunt. Charlie also enjoyed trap shooting, snooker, fishing trips with his buddies, family vacations to Okoboji and road trips with Rex.
He had so many fond memories of his fishing trips to Canada and was even thinking of going back one last time. Charlie was also an animal lover and loved all of his pets, which included his many Labrador Retrievers, his special cat Sherlock, and his rescue cat Fuzzie.
According to a recent post on Facebook by one of his friends, “Charlie was a great fellow with a gift for making everyone who sat in his barber chair feel special.”
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother-in-law John Scheffler Jr., and his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Clara and John Scheffler, Sr..
Charlie will be deeply missed by all those who are left to cherish his memory, which include his wife Susan of Avoca, Iowa; his daughter Erin and her significant other Mike Yates of Avoca, Iowa and his daughter Kara and her husband Joe Boro of Omaha, Nebraska; and finally his granddaughters Adryan, Lauren and Claira of Avoca, Iowa and Elizabeth of Omaha, Nebraska; sister-in-law Gina Scheffler of Arizona as well as many wonderful cousins and friends.
