Charlotte Ann Stewart was born on August 2, 1925 to Edward Rosenthal and Susan Sondag in Portsmouth, Iowa. She attended school at St. Mary’s in Portsmouth and was the valedictorian of her high school graduating class in 1943. Charlotte attended Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa for elementary education. She took piano lessons from Mrs. Potter and later played the piano in the Earl Russell orchestral for four years. She became an elementary school teacher in a one room school house in Portsmouth for four years.

On November 23, 1955 she was united in marriage to Eugene W. Stewart. They became the parents to two daughters: Trudy and Elizabeth. Charlotte and her family lived on a farm outside of Jacksonville from 1955 to 1970. They moved to Harlan in 1970. Eugene passed away in 1989 and Charlotte remained in Harlan until she moved to Avoca Nursing and Rehab in 2009.

Charlotte was a substitute teacher at St. Michael’s and gave piano lessons from her home for many years. She enjoyed going to auctions, sales, and garage sales where she bought antiques and collectibles; she then sold them from her home. Charlotte’s hobbies included sewing quilts and crocheting doilies and afghans.

Charlotte died on Monday, December 30, 2013 Avoca Nursing and Rehab Center having attained the age of eighty eight years, four months, and twenty eight days. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, sister Rosemary Lajba, and brother Edward Rosenthal.

She is survived by her two daughters: Trudy and her husband Dale Plagmann of Harlan, Iowa and Elizabeth and her husband Bob Peterson of Carroll, Iowa; grandchildren: David Plagmann, Jane Plagmann, Denise Plagmann, Nick Schumacher and Jordan Dodd; other family members and many friends.

Rev. John Frost celebrated the 11:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, January 4, 2014 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa. Kate Kohorst was the accompanist with John Rosman as vocalist. Serving as pallbearers were John Lajba, Francis Lajba, David Plagman, Nick Schumacher, Tony Sondag, and Randal Nowatzke. Internment was held at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Portsmouth, Iowa.
