Charlyn Joan (Johnson) Schultz was born on May 12, 1928, in Kiron, Iowa, the daughter of Carl (Ted) and Etta Johnson. She was raised in Kiron and, in 1945; she graduated from Kiron High School. She earned her RN degree from Mounds-Midway School of Nursing in St. Paul, Minnesota, in 1950.After graduation, she worked in the nursing field in Omaha, Nebraska, prior to joining the United States Air Force Nurse Corp. She returned to Kiron in 1958 and continued her nursing profession at Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove, Iowa, and Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison. She retired from nursing in 1993.On May 31, 1958, Charlyn married Burdell Schultz in Carroll, Iowa. They lived in Kiron, and were blessed with five children, eight grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. In 1979, Charlyn relocated to Denison.Charlyn enjoyed volunteering at the Crawford County Senior Center, with the hospital auxiliary, and for the American Red Cross Bloodmobile. She was a member of Denison First United Methodist Church and the Methodist Women’s Circle. She enjoyed reading, puzzles, knitting, crocheting, and handiwork. She was also an avid Nebraska Cornhusker football fan.Charlyn is survived by her five children: Karla (Scott) Woolridge of Denison, Tom (Beth) Schultz of Prairie Village, Kansas, Paula Bradley of Salado, Texas, Jackie (Jerrod) Lawrence of Omaha, Nebraska, and Ted (Marsha) Schultz of Grinnell, Iowa; eight grandchildren: Miranda Ward of Denison, Natalie Bohlmann of Maplewood, Minnesota, Kylie and Jackson Schultz of Prairie Village, Kansas, Kyle and Ryan Bradley of Salado, Texas, and Reigan and Isaac Lawrence of Omaha, Nebraska; one great-grandchild, Lily Ward of Denison; one brother, Bill (Jeannine) Johnson of Houston, Texas; and several nieces and nephews. Others who were special in her life include Sue Ellen Breeding of Prairie Village, Kansas, the Denison Care Center staff, members of the United Methodist Church, and countless friends.Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 15, 2015 at First United Methodist Church in Denison, Iowa with the Rev. Jan Burnett officiating. Music for the service included a processional hymn of “Take My Hand Precious Lord” sung by the congregation, a solo of “Come to Jesus” sung by Reigan Lawrence and a recorded selection of “Great is Thy Faithfulness” by Jordan Smith with Nancy Miles serving as organist.A private family interment preceded the services at St. John Lutheran Cemetery Stockholm Township, Kiron, Iowa with Military Honors by American Legion Post 8, Denison, Iowa. Taps were played by Father Paul Kelly. Following the funeral services everyone was invited to join the family in fellowship and a luncheon provided by United Methodist Women.
