Claire L. Rossmann Walter
July 24, 1908 — September 25, 2007
Claire Lenore Walter, the daughter of Eugene E. and Lenore (Stinger) Mickel, was born on July 24, 1908 in Walnut, Iowa. She attended school in Walnut and graduated from Walnut High School. After graduation she taught rural school for three years and then taught third and fourth grades in Minden, Iowa for two years.
Claire was united in marriage to Wilbert Rossmann on June 29, 1932 at the Evangelical Lutheran Parsonage in Walnut, Iowa. After their marriage they moved to a farm north of Walnut. Their son Jack was born on December 4, 1936. They purchased a farm near Corley, Iowa in 1936 and moved into the farmhouse in 1937. In 1954, Jack graduated from high school in Harlan, Iowa and attended Iowa State in Ames, Iowa. It was then, in 1965, that Claire went back to teaching. She taught Title 1 reading, a special program set up by the government, in the Harlan Community School System and remained there for eight years. After Wilbert's death in September of 1984, Claire moved to Peace Haven Retirement Home. While living at Peace Haven she met Harry Walter. They were united in marriage on February 14, 1987. Harry died in August of 1987.
Claire died at Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn, Iowa on Tuesday, September 25, 2007 having attained the age of ninty-nine years, two months and one day. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands Wilbert and Harry; one brother, Fred Mickel and four sisters: Gladys Fell, Aletha Paulsen, Irene Norton and Maine Larsen.
Survivors include her son, Jack Rossmann, and his wife Marty of St. Paul, Minnesota; three grandchildren: Ann Rossmann of Lakeville, Minnesota; Sarah and her husband Fred Deschamps of St. Paul, Minnesota and Charles Rossmann and his wife Kathleen of Birmingham, Alabama; great grandson, Ramsey Rossmann; three great granddaughters: Emma and Lily Deschamps and Carmen Rossmann; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, September 29, 2007 at the Peace United Church of Christ in Walnut with Rev. Gail Muckey officiating. Burial was in Layton Township Cemetery. Those serving as casket bearers were Dan Riessen, Fred Deschamps, Greg Boysen, John Hamilton, Bruce Jensen and James Petersen.
