Clara Elizabeth Scheffler
Clara Elizabeth Schuttloffel Scheffler was born December 2, 1918. She was born on the family farm six miles south of Walnut, Iowa. She was the youngest of five children. Her parents were John Andrew and Dora (Sell) Schuttloffel. Clara grew up on a farm and really enjoyed all the baby farm animals. She often reminisced about her baby pet pig she had as a child.
Clara attended country grade school and graduated valedictorian in 1936 from Walnut High School. She often spoke of the hot summer that preceeded the equally harsh winter of 1936 and told stories about how difficult it was getting back to Walnut to attend classes her senior year. After graduation she took the train to California to spend time with her sister Erma. During her time spent with Erma and her family they vacationed in Yosemite National Park and camped out in the Giant Redwood Forest.
Clara began her career teaching in the country school system. After teaching for two years she moved to Omaha to attend Omaha University now known as UNO. During this time she decided to go to work at the Martin Bomber Plant to aid the war effort during World War II. When the war ended she met John Scheffler who had just returned home from the war. On August 3, 1946 John and Clara were married in the Methodist Church in Hancock, Iowa. They lived in Hancock for about four years and then moved to Avoca, Iowa. Clara taught country school east of Avoca and then came to town to teach sixth grade and later fifth grade. Clara and John had two children Susan and John Jr.
Clara loved teaching and missed the kids after she retired. She enjoyed her flowers and had her east patio full of beautiful rosey red geraniums each summer. Clara and John loved to travel and took trips to the East Coast sand West Coast to visit friends and family. In the winter they pulled their travel trailer south to the Gulf Coast to get away from the cold and snow for a few months.
Clara and John had over thirty years together during their retirement and truly enjoyed each other’s company. They loved a daily spirited game of cards and sometimes they would have a friendly wager that whoever won the most hands that day was “the boss” for the day!
Clara was an amazingly wonderful cook and made everything from “scratch.” She loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren very much and was so thrilled when the youngest great-grandchild was named after her.
Clara was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church and had been so fortunate to have the gift of excellent health until February 2014.
In February 2014 she fell ill and was in and out of the hospital and the Avoca Nursing Home until her passing.
Clara died on Sunday March 15, 2015 at Myrtue Medical Center. She is preceded in death by her parents, her son John Jr, brothers Arthur, Elton and Robert, and her sister Erma. She leaves to mourn her passing her husband John Scheffler of Avoca, Iowa; her daughter Sue and husband Charlie Ronnfeldt of Avoca, Iowa; her daughter-in-law Gina Scheffler of Audubon, Iowa; her daughter-in-law Carol Page of Wiota, Iowa; her grandchild Erin Ronnfeldt and her significant other Mike Yates of Avoca, Iowa; her grandchild Kara and her husband Joe Boro of Omaha, Nebraska; her grandchild Jennifer Scheffler Peterson of Harlan, Iowa; her grandchild Scott Barker of Atlantic, Iowa; her great-grandchildren Adryan Bruce, Lauren Yates and Claira Yates of Avoca, Iowa and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
