Cletus Matthew "Bud" Weis
February 2, 1926 — April 29, 2021
Cletus 'Bud" Weis was the oldest of 14 children raised by Gabriella Koesters Weis and Joseph Weis. Bud was born on February 2, 1926. He grew up on a farm near Earling and attended country school for one year until attending St. Joseph's Catholic School graduating with the class of 1944. Bud loved playing sports his whole life. Bud played high school basketball, and played baseball for the Earling town teams. He was well known as a pitcher and a hitter. It is a folk lore in Shelby County that at a game in Earling, Bud hit a baseball so hard that went from home plate to across the railroad tracks that are well past the outfield fence.
Bud was a great competitor his whole life. In the 1960's Bud appeared on two bowling shows broadcast out of Omaha. Strike it Lucky at the Rose Bowl and Bowling at Leisure at the Leisure Lanes. He bowled in many leagues and tournaments in his lifetime. He was on a bowling team that won the Knights of Columbus State tournament in the 60's. He earned many metals at the Senior Olympic in track events. He was also won Horseshoe trophies at the Clay County Fair in Spencer, Iowa.
Bud married his high school classmate Elaine Frederick on Jan 07, 1948. Together they were parents of 10 children; Ken, Donna, Jan, Terry, Gail, Mary Sue, Craig, Jerry, Tammy and Kris.
Bud and Elaine farmed northeast of Earling. Typical of farmers at that time, the family raised chickens, sheep, hogs, cow-calf herds and dairy cows. Bud also worked at Farmland Foods for 27 ½ years and owned his own trucking company. Upon retirement from farming Bud purchased a bulldozer and also did demolition of old buildings and barns. He also worked at Jim's Wholesale Meats during his retirement.
Elaine died February 18, 1975, after a short bout with lymphoma. As time passed Bud joined the support group, Parents Without Partners where he met his second wife Wilma (Willie) Stuart Hadley. Bud married Willie on July 26, 1980 and they made their home in Harlan. Willie died Sept. 19, 2010, as a result of a brain cancer.
Bud died on April 29, 2021, at the age of 95 years old. Bud was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Gabriella Weis. His wives, Elaine Frederick Weis and Wilma Stuart Hadley Weis. His brothers Gene Weis, Bob Weis, and sisters Elaine Sheldon, Marie McGill, Agnes Gary, Alice Alexander, Betty Pauley, Norma Goetz, Grace Madden. In-laws Pete and Isabel Frederick, Herm and Helen Albers, Albert (Ty) and Helen Frederick, Tony and Marjorie Ausman, Charles Frederick, William Frederick and John and Nona Kloewer. Pete Sheldon, Elmer Gary, Gladys Weis, Jerome Pauley, Tony Goetz, Gary Madden and Jack McGill. He is survived by brothers, Ron Weis and his wife Rita of Omaha, NE, Joe Weis Norfolk, NE, Gary Weis and his wife Joanne of Omaha, sister Pat Muenthrath and her husband Tom of Harlan, sister-in-laws Leona Weis Smith, and Ruth Ann Weis.
Also surviving Bud are his children and Willie's children. Bud's children with Elaine and their spouses: Ken and Judy Weis of Omaha, Donna and Joe Adler of Omaha, Jan and Steve Davis of Council Bluffs, Terry and Sharon Weis of Treynor, Gail and Lori Weis of Omaha, Mary Sue and Don Assmann of Surprise, AZ, Craig and Michele Weis of Earling, Jerry and Theresa Weis of Irwin, Tammy & John Link of Ansonia CT., Kris and Ted Hennings of Council Bluffs. Bud and Elaine had 10 children, 29 grandchildren, 43 great -grandchildren. Two great-great-grandchildren.
Willma's children and spouses: Randy and Linette Hadley of Urbandale, Rick and April Hadley of Houston, TX. Stuart and Allison Hadley of Chandler, AZ., Mitch and Lyn Miller Gunter, TX, and Gary and Angel Hadley of Frisco, TX. Willie had 5 children, 15 grandkids and 13 great-grandkids.
Also, Bud is survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and his longtime companion Rachel Dolby of Irwin, IA.
