Clifford Behrendt, son of John Joseph and J. Mae (Kelley) Behrendt, was born on July 14, 1936 in Harlan, Iowa. He attended country School in Lincoln Township then graduated from Harlan High School, with the class of 1954. After high school, Clifford worked at various gas stations, Western Engineering, and drove truck. He went on to work for the ASCS office in Harlan, and continued to drive truck for Hockett, Cox, COOP, and milk truck for David Christensen.
On June 5, 1965, Clifford was united in marriage to Paula Darling at the United Methodist Church in Irwin, Iowa. After getting married, they farmed just outside of Harlan. Clifford also ran a snow removal business for many years. He worked as a security guard at the Shelby County Fair. Clifford loved going to farm sales, looking at older farm equipment, especially Oliver. He liked working with his small cow herd and chickens, doing custom farm work, and gardening. He was rarely seen without one of his beloved rat terriers. Clifford retired in 2002, but could regularly be seen talking farming at the Mickel's round table or the Scoular elevator with a glass of iced tea.
