Delores Colleen Rose Winey was born November 23, 1933, in Deloit, Iowa, to William E. And Julia Johnson Smith. She was baptized in Christ at the Reorganized Church of the Latter-Day Saints in Denison in 1941. Colleen attended elementary and high school in Deloit, Iowa.
On August 5, 1951 Colleen was united in marriage to Kay Addison Winey at the First United Methodist Church in Denison. They were blessed with two children, Keith Patrick and Jamie Sue. After living a short time in Deloit, they moved to the family farm northwest of Deloit. During that time Colleen worked as a bookkeeper at Montgomery Ward in Denison. In 1960, she went to work for Dr. Charles H. Fee as a medical assistant and then in 1966 Kay and Colleen purchased and operated the Deloit Mercantile until 1973. From 1973 to 1977 Colleen worked at Iowa Beef Processors Credit Union as clerk and later as a billing supervisor. The couple then moved to Adair where Colleen got her EMT-A Certification and began volunteering as an EMT with the Adair Fire Department and later working at CASS, Inc. in Atlantic for a year. In 1979 Colleen worked for Iowa Department of Social Services in Atlantic and Denison until retiring in 1998 in Denison. She moved back to Adair in 2000 where she lived until 2006 when she moved to a care facility to aid in her management of Alzheimer’s.
Colleen was an avid sports fan and especially loved following the Kansas City Royals baseball team. Playing cards was also a favorite pastime of hers. She was a loving mother and grandmother and enjoyed spending time with her family.
Colleen died on January 8, 2018, at the New Homestead Care Center in Guthrie Center having attained the age of 84 year, 1 month and 16 days. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Madonna Terrell and brothers, William V. and Everett Smith.
Those left to cherish her memory are her son, Keith Winey and wife Diane of Dallas Center, IA, and daughter Jamie Sue Starleaf of Fargo, ND; grandchildren: Kevin Winey and wife Leslie of Earlham, IA, Alex Starleaf and wife Robyn of San Antonio, TX, and Amanda Arwood and husband Josh of Fargo, ND; seven great grandchildren; sister, Carol Jean Segebart and husband Edward of Fremont, NE; sister-in-law, Mary Smith of Murfree Borough, TN; other relatives and friends.


In Lieu of flowers donations are recommended to the Alzheimer's Association in honor of Colleen.
