Cory W. Custer
June 4, 1990 — January 10, 2012
Cory William Custer was born on June 4, 1990 to Cole and Alicia (Gross) Custer in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He was baptized at the First United Methodist Church in Harlan, Iowa, where he remained a member.
He attended the Harlan Community Schools and graduated with the Class of 2009. While in school, he participated in football, baseball, track, and wrestling. He played hard and was fearless in all endeavors and was proud of his scars. He was also proud of his country and his friends who were serving in the armed forces.
He enjoyed riding motorcycles with his dad and being on the open road and always had a good time floating down the river with his buddies. Cory had a lot of love and admiration for his family, especially his grandmothers and cousins and had shared a very special bond with his sister, Jessica. He was a good listener, even when you thought he wasn’t listening.
Cory was currently working for Panama Transfer doing dock work. He also worked with his mom and grandma at Molded Products and scrapping iron with his dad.
He died tragically while on a hunting trip on Tuesday, January 10, 2012, having attained the age of twenty-one years, seven months, and six days. He was preceded in death by his sister Jessica.
He is survived by his mother Alicia Custer of Harlan, Iowa; father Cole Custer and his wife Michelle of Harlan; brother Wyatt Schaben of Harlan; step brothers and sisters: Jonathan Boldan of Omaha, Nebraska, Whitney Boldan, Brianna Boldan, and Elijah Boldan all of Harlan; grandparents: Rebecca Herning of Harlan, Jolene Lytle of Harlan, Bill and Ruby Custer of Soldier, Iowa, and Vern Gross of California; great-grandparents Marvin and Audrie Will of Arizona, and Pearl Custer of Woodbine, Iowa; other family members and many friends.
Pastor Donna Ewert officiated the 2:00 PM funeral service on Monday, January 16, 2012 at the First United Methodist Church in Harlan, Iowa. Serving as casket bearers were Rees Christensen, Richard Petersen, Paul Zimmerman, Matt Rasmussen, Austin Kolbe, Dylan Wageman, Danielle Sondag, June Haupts, Jeannine Haupts, Jonny Boldan, Nick Bosak, Brian Sheehan, and Miles Casey. Interment was held at the Harlan Cemetery.
