Craig Alvin Gubbels was born on May 12, 1950 to Alvin and Mabel (Weihs) Gubbels in Harlan, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia where he remained a life-long member. He attended school in Westphalia and Defiance before graduating from Harlan Community High School with the Class of 1968.
After high school, Craig joined the National Guard. He went to work at Western Iowa Pork for several years. He also worked part-time for Van’s Moving and Storage and spent his entire life farming the home place.
He enjoyed going to auctions and car shows and was extremely proud of his own 1971 Chevelle. He liked to travel, with Arizona and Mexico as two of his favorite destinations. He was a Nascar and drag racing fan attending the Daytona 500 and Gator Nationals being highlights of the racing season. He also liked to watch Westerns on TV.
Due to his health, Craig had to give up farming in 2011 but continued to live on the family farm. He died on Wednesday, April 30, 2014 at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa, having attained the age of sixty-three years, eleven months, and eighteen days. He was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his brothers Tom Gubbels and his wife Julie of Harlan, Iowa, Gail Gubbels and his wife Deb of Yankton, South Dakota, and Clay Gubbels and his wife Diane of Carroll, Iowa; sister Kim and her husband Al Norris of Omaha, Nebraska; nieces and nephews; other family members and friends.
