Dallas Popp was born on October 16, 1948 to Erwin F. and Eldren Catherina (Ranniger) Popp in Atlantic, Iowa. He was one of ten children. He was confirmed and became a member at Trinity Lutheran Church in Avoca, Iowa. He went to Walnut Community School and graduated with the class of 1967.
Dallas enlisted in 1968 in the United States Marine Corps during Vietnam. He loved the USA and being a Marine. He was honorably discharged after losing his leg. He received a National Defense Service Medal; Vietnam Service Medal; Vietnam Campaign Medal and a Purple Heart. There was never a day that he complained about serving his country or losing his leg in battle - he was a proud American.
Dallas was a carpenter and enjoyed, carpentry, plumbing and remodeling old homes. He also enjoyed hunting, camping and fishing. He enjoyed the time he served on the Park Board, and he especially enjoyed attending his grand kids events. Dallas never met a stranger and listening to music (especially the oldies) and drinking a cold one with friends were some of his favorite things to do.
Dallas died at home in Avoca, Iowa on Saturday, June 18, 2016 surrounded by his family, having attained the age of sixty seven years, eight months, and two days. He was preceded in death by his parents, his son Paul Freeman, his brothers; Ronald, Virgil, Eugene, Duane, Darold and sister Carol.
His survivors include his wife Barbara (Smith) Popp of Avoca, Iowa; children - Penny and her husband Jeff Nelson of Harlan, Iowa; Ed Freeman and his wife Michelle of Avoca, Iowa; Jerrad Popp and his wife Jennifer of Adel, Iowa; Jason Engle and his wife Cheryl of Avoca, Iowa; and Amy and her husband Wes Parker of Oakland, Iowa; fifteen grandchildren; sisters: Joanne and her husband Vern Schnackel of Clancy Montana; and Marlene Pangburn of Atlantic, Iowa; brother Eldon Popp of Walnut, Iowa; nephews, nieces, and many friends.
