Daniel Rees was born on May 18, 1923, to Joseph and Lula (Thorton) Rees in Grand Junction, Iowa. He graduated from high school and received his Bachelor�s degree from Bellevue University in Nebraska.
He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on July 9, 1942 and served as a Technical Sargeant. Daniel was a non-commissioned pilot. He was honorably discharged from the Marine Corp on July 9, 1946 from Cherry Point, North Carolina.
He was called back to the military from inactive duty. On March 10, 1951, he enlisted in the United States Air Force as a Master Sargeant.
After twenty-three years in military service, he retired as Chief Master Sargeant on April 30, 1967.
Between all of his military career and travels, he found time to marry Carrie Bonnesen on October 6, 1951, at Forbes Air Force Base in Topeka, Kansas. Two children were born to this union: Randy and Anna Belle.
Daniel and Carrie settled in Avoca, Iowa after his retirement from the military. They purchased the Sportsman restaurant and ran it from 1970 to 1973. He was a member of the city council and loved to travel and play golf.
In August 2008, they moved to Primrose Retirement Community in Council Bluffs, Iowa. It was there that he died on Sunday, March 14, 2010, having attained the age of eighty-six years, nine months, and twenty-four days. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Rosemary Seeds, and brothers Joseph and David Rees.
Daniel is survived by his wife of fifty-eight years, Carrie Rees of Council Bluffs, Iowa; his children: Roxanne and her husband Tom Carrigan, Jr. of Emmettsburg, Iowa, Michelle and her husband Larry Douglas of Des Moines, Iowa, Randy Rees and his wife Jennifer of Underwood, Iowa, and Anna Belle and her husband Timothy Mills of Dupont, Washington; four grandchildren: Daniel and Alison Rees, and Jacqueline and James Mills; three great-grandchildren: Alexis and Adam Meyers and Emma Rees; brothers and sisters: Lola Baumbach of Jefferson, Iowa, Lois Morlan of Hastings, NE, Phyllis and her husband Jim Wiebenga of Jefferson, Iowa, John Rees of St. Petersburg, Florida, and Donald Rees and his wife Margaret; nieces and nephews; other family members and friends.
Pastor Dennis Reich conducted the 11:00 AM funeral service at Trinity Lutheran Church in Avoca, Iowa. Interment will be held at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter, Iowa.
