Daniel Joseph Wegner was born on February 2, 1959 to Roland and Velma (Peterson) Wegner in Harlan, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary’s of the Assumption Catholic Church in Panama, Iowa. Daniel graduated from Woodbine High School.
Dan was united in marriage to Stephany Mathiasen in Holmstead, Florida. Three sons were born to this union: Shawn, Steven, and Spencer.
He was a hard worker his whole life and even worked through the times he was undergoing dialysis. He received his first of three kidney transplants at age 20.
Dan worked for the railroad for two years, and held a packing job at Western Iowa Pork before becoming a farm hand for his brother-in-law, Bruce. He also raised hogs for many years on the family farm. Later, Dan worked as a home builder in Harlan and was also a valued handiman throughout town.
Dan especially loved spending time with his grandkids. He enjoyed building things and the construction work he did for people, but his favorite activity was going to the salebarn every Saturday in Denison.
Daniel died on Friday, December 27, 2013 at his home in Harlan, Iowa, having attained the age of fifty-four years, ten months, and twenty-five days. He was preceded in death by his mother, and his brother, Roger.
He is survived by his father, Roland Wegner of Harlan, Iowa; his sons Shawn Wegner of Harlan, Steven Wegner and his wife Wendy of Council Bluffs, Iowa and Spencer Wegner and his wife Lori of Avoca, Iowa; his beloved grandchildren Phoenix, Calee, Ryker and Chloe Wegner; his sisters and brothers Debra Busing and her husband Bruce of Logan, Iowa, Robert Wegner and his wife Jane of Osage Beach, Missouri, Paul Wegner and his wife Kristi of Harlan, David Wegner and his wife Kelly of Lake View, Iowa, and Linda Adair and her husband Craig of Logan, and his sister-in-law Kim (Wegner) Larsen and her husband Tom of Council Bluffs, Iowa; aunts and uncles Dorothy Michael and her husband Carl of Logan, Joseph Peterson of Walnut, Helen Hanson and her husband Chuck of Moorehead, Iowa, Elaine Wageman and her husband Ron of Apple Valley, Minnesota, Donald Peterson and his wife Glenda of Spencer, Iowa, Alvin Peterson of Chandler, Arizona, Darlene Havick of Shenandoah, Iowa, Kenneth Peterson of Chandler, Arizona, Debra Jensen of Livermore, Iowa, and Luella Hesse and her husband Glen of Billingham, Washington; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Rev. John Dorton officiated the 11:00 AM Celebration of Life service on Tuesday, December 31, 2013 at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa. Honorary casket bearers were Phoenix Wegner, Calee Wegner, Ryker Wegner, and Chloe Wegner. Inurnment was held at the Harlan Cemetery.
