Darle L. Pedersen
March 21, 1916 — May 13, 2014
Darle Laverne Pedersen was born on March 21, 1916 to Bradley and Hazel (Grabill) McCord in Harlan, Iowa. She was baptized at Bethel Baptist Church. She attended grade school at Center Township No. 1 and graduated with the Class of 1933 from Harlan High School. She continued her education at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa and graduated with her Bachelor’s Degree in Education in 1966. Darle taught at Polk Township country school for a year.
On November 9, 1935, she was united in marriage to Emory Christensen at First Baptist Church in Council Bluffs, Iowa. There were two children born to them: Lane and Sandy. Emory was a pilot for TWA and was transferred to Omaha, Los Angeles, Kansas City, and Trona, California. Darle and her children moved back to the Harlan area where she taught school in Jackson Township, Avoca, and Harlan before retiring after thirty-one years of teaching.
In 1951, Darle married Clifford Pedersen and acquired two more children: Judy and Raymon. She was a fifty-plus year member of the Lebanon Chapter No. 8 Order of the Eastern Star, was initiated into Delta Kappa Gamma in November of 1976, and was a very active volunteer for the hospital and nursing home. She was a member of First Baptist Church and served as a board member for the Shelby County Historical Society.
Darle enjoyed reading, crocheting, sewing, playing piano, doing puzzles, and traveling. She loved sports, especially watching the Final Four NCAA tournaments, and spending time with her family and her grandkids.
She remained living in her own apartment until her admission to the hospital where she died on Tuesday, May 13, 2014, having attained the age of ninety-eight years, one month, and fourteen days. She was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, and her son Lane Christensen.
She is survived by her children: Sandy and her husband Randy Conrad of Harlan, Iowa, Raymon Pedersen and his wife Patti of Pewaukee, Wisconsin, and Judy Klindt and her partner Mike Bridgman of Clermont, Florida; eleven grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; brother Lynn McCord and his wife Grace of Harlan, Iowa; other family members and friends.
