Darlene Ellen Meisland Anderson was born on November 6, 1925, in Harlan, Iowa, to Theodore and Ellen (Hansen) Meisland. She was baptized at the Danway Lutheran Country Church south of Irwin, Iowa, and confirmed at the Harlan Immanuel Lutheran Church, where she remained a lifelong member. She attended the Harlan School system.
On January 27, 1942, she was united in marriage to Chester Edward Anderson. Chet was leaving for Shepardfield, Texas to be inducted into the Army Air Corp. As soon as he was settled, Darlene joined him in Texas. When he was transferred to Petersen Field Air Base in Colorado Springs, Colorado, she stayed behind until he was settled and again joined him. When they were expecting their first daughter, she went home to live with her parents. Lois Jean was born October 4, 1943 and died three months later. Chet was stationed overseas at the time and couldn't be reached. There were three other children born to this union: Dean, Deanna, and Stephen.
Darlene worked as a Pay Clerk for customers and employees of the Harlan Produce. She was transferred to Seymour Food Company in Denison, Iowa, to be their daily financial reporter to the main office in Kansas City. Her last working years were spent serving the State of Iowa as a Home Health Aide and Homemaker and with R.L.D.S. as a coordinator for their Home Health service headquartered in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
She was a lifetime member of Shelby County Historical Museum, the Myrtue Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and the Iowa Betterment State Organization, where she received an award from Governor Brandstad for her services on their board.
Darlene died on Friday, November 20, 2015 at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan just fourteen days after her ninetieth birthday. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Chet, daughter Lois Jean, son Stephen, sisters Helen Clark, Pearl Anderson, Amanda Aasgaard, Emily Monkman, and Thelma Jacobs; and brothers Porter and Theodore Meisland.
She is survived by her children: Dean Anderson of Harlan, Iowa and Deanna and her husband Gary Krummel of Avoca, Iowa; six grandchildren: Chris Krummel and his wife Jenny, Kimberly Behrendt and her friend Alan Thompson, Michelle and her husband Eric Brooks, Melissa Jacobsen and friend Jim Stanley, David Anderson, and Jamie Anderson; fifteen great-grandchildren: Shelby, Hadley, and Chet Krummel, Katy Ponsar, Kayla Anderson, Alissa and Matt Andersen, Aaron and Chelsea Brooks, Cory, Nick, and Ashley Behrendt, Kelsey Tetzlaff, Jordan and Jessica Jacobsen; daughter-in-law Kathy Anderson of Harlan, Iowa; other family members and friends.
