Darlene May Dickinson Hanson, daughter of Norris “Ben” and Martha (Monkman) Dickinson, was born May 2, 1927 in the Lincoln Township of Shelby County. She was baptized and confirmed at rural St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. Darlene attended Kirkman United Methodist Church for a short time as a child, but she was a lifelong member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and belonged to the Women’s Church Circle.
Darlene graduated from Kirkman School as Valedictorian of her class. She married A. Gilbert Hanson on February 25, 1945 at St. Paul’s Lutheran and to this union, four children were born. Gilbert and Darlene moved to Harlan after building a new home in 1988.
Darlene enjoyed genealogy, oil painting, china painting, and reading. She belonged to several organizations, including Polk Township Neighborhood Club, Daughters of the American Revolution, Iowa Genealogy Society, China Painters of Harlan, World Organization of China Painters, and the Nishnabotna Genealogy Society.
Darlene died August 14, 2017, achieving the age of 90 years, 3 months, and 12 days. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband A. Gilbert Hanson; granddaughter April VanMeter; great-grandson Jacob Henkelman; brother Norris B. Dickinson Jr.; and brother Gaillard D. Dickinson.
She is survived by her daughter Peggy (Ron) Doonan of Harlan, IA; son Karl (Cindy) Hanson of Kirkman, IA; daughter Laura (Mike) Albert of Willmar, MN; daughter Linda VanMeter and special friend Kevin Hokom of New London, MN; grandchildren Trent (Christine) Doonan, Troy Doonan, Stacy (Jeff) Henkelman, Rachelle (Phill) Larson, Lisa (Jon) Mohr, Gabe (Cindy) Hanson, Carli Johnson, Zac Albert; great-grandchildren Amanda Doonan, Nathan Doonan, Madison Doonan, Bristol Doonan, Megan (Alex) Londo, Tyler Doonan, Beckett Doonan, Lucas Henkelman, Michael Henkelman, Rebecca Larson, Taylor Mohr, Justin Mohr, Jared Mohr, Nicole Hanson, Morgan Hanson, Katlynn Hanson, Barrett Johnson; and great-great grandchildren Riley Londo and Emmylou Larson; other friends and family members.
