Darlene Schuning
June 23, 1929 — January 9, 2018
Darlene Elsie (Lubbe) Schuning, daughter of Bill and Louise (Graalfs) Lubbe, was born on June 23, 1929 in Hardin Township. She was raised on a farm and went to country schools graduating 8th grade in 1942. She attended Treynor High School for one year then transferred to Abraham Lincoln in Council Bluffs, Iowa where she graduated in 1946 at 16 years of age.
Darlene was baptized in the St. John Evangelical Church in Council Bluffs. She was confirmed in the Treynor Congregational Church. After graduation, she stayed home helping her dad farm in place of her brother who was in the service.
On February 5, 1951, she married Derald “Jiggs” Schuning and to this union three children were born. She was again a hired man helping with chores and harvesting the crops. She had big gardens and raised a lot of chickens.
In March of 1981, she went to work at CDS in Harlan which lasted 10 years retiring in 1991. She enjoyed her family very much and was always there when they needed her. Her family always enjoyed her chocolate cream pies, homemade rye bread and potato salad.
Darlene died on Tuesday, January 9, 2018 at Elm Crest Retirement Community in Harlan, attaining the age of eighty-eight years, six months and seventeen days. She was preceded in death by her husband Derald in 2007, her parents, brother Marvin in 1999 and sister Velma in 2012.
Survivors include her children Richard Schuning and his wife Dyan of Neola, Iowa; Diane and her husband Calvin Nielsen of Harlan, Iowa; Marilyn and her husband Pat McKeighan of Coucil Bluffs, Iowa; 9 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; sister-in-law Sharon and her husband Virgil Hoff of Texas; many nieces and nephews; other family members and friends.
