Darlene Joyce (Goshorn) Schuster was born on January 22, 1935, to Glenn and Bernadeen (Albertus) Goshorn in Avoca, Iowa. She attended Puder Country School near Oakland, Iowa until 1945, and then attended Shelby High School and graduated in 1952. After high school, she attended Commercial Extension School of Business in Omaha from June of 1952 to June of 1953. Darlene married her high school sweetheart, Robert Schuster, on August 22, 1953, at the Presbyterian Church in Shelby. Shortly thereafter, they moved to Fort Hood, Texas where Bob was stationed while in the US Army. To this union two children were born: Sandra and Cheryl.

Growing up, Darlene was baptized and confirmed at the Presbyterian Church in Shelby and was a devoted and lifelong member of the church. She served as a Sunday school teacher, bible school director, various church boards and a part of the Women’s group. Darlene and Bob moved to the Schuster Family Farm in Shelby in October of 1955. This is where they would spend the rest of their married life together. Darlene was a devoted farmers wife for over 40 years, she loved flowers and gardening, watching country wildlife from their windows, enjoyed the outside cats and spent many years collecting nativity scenes to display at Christmas time. She loved to watch her grandchildren and great-grandchildren in all their activities and would most often travel to spend time with them. She spent her later working career at the McDowell Fitness Center in Harlan registering clients and helping wherever she was needed. In 2005, Darlene became an active member in the United Church of Avoca congregation and even served as a Church Deacon.

On Monday, August 8, 2022, Darlene passed away at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa, having attained the age of 87 years, 6 months and 17 days. She was preceded in death by her parents Glenn and Bernadeen; husband Robert; and brother Donald Goshorn.
