HER JOURNEY HAS JUST BEGUN
Darline Wickham Walsh was born on August 23, 1926, the daughter of Ervin O. and Jeanette Uhlenhopp Wickham. She died Monday, August 22, 2022, at Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa, at the age of 95.
Darline was born in Dumont, Iowa. She was baptized in the United Brethren Church in Dumont. On April 7, 1941, she accepted the Lord and knew why he died on the cross for her. Darline graduated in 1943 from Dumont High School and continued her education at Gates Business College in Waterloo, Iowa.
After finishing Business College she was secretary to the president of a wholesale hardware company in Waterloo, Iowa, for five years.
On June 5th, 1950 Darline became the bride of William James Walsh of Bristow, Iowa. They moved to Denison in 1955 where William became the high school principal.
Darline was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Denison where she had been a Sunday School teacher, choir member, and was given Life Membership of Wesleyan Service Guild in 1970. She was also a member of PEO Chapter CO, L.M. Shaw Chapter of Questers, American Legion Auxiliary, and Kiwanis. She was the first woman president of Kiwanis in Denison in 1993-1994 and served as their secretary for thirteen years. In 1998 the Kiwanis Club honored her with the Hixson Fellowship Award. She was also a past officer of the Midwest Sad Iron Collectors Club and helped organize several reunions of the Navy shipmates of the USS Santee CVE, the organization her husband started in 1986. She was employed at the Crawford County Credit Bureau with David Schuetz, the medical office of Dr. Dayrle N. Crabb, and the Western Hills Area Education Agency while working in Denison.
Her husband, William (Bill) Walsh, and her parents preceded her in death.
Darline is survived by her daughter, Aloha Celeste Walsh Byl and her husband, Calvin Byl, of Midland, Michigan, three grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
