Darrell Ward Fryar was born at Marathon, Iowa, December 22, 1924, the son of Louis Vern and Muriel Wittmer Fryar. He was raised on the farm east of Rockwell City, Iowa, and graduated from the Rockwell City High School. From March of 1946 until his honorable discharge in September of 1947, Darrell served his country in the United States Army. Upon his discharge, he returned to the farm at Rockwell City and farmed with his father and worked on the railroad. On June 7, 1953, Darrell was united in marriage with MarvelAnn Goodwin at Rockwell City, Iowa. Their union was blessed with two children, Roxanne and Brian. They made their home there where Darrell was employed in the Calhoun County Assessor Office. They then moved to Lake City, Iowa, where he was bookkeeper at the Snyder John Deere Implement Dealer. From Lake City they moved to Carroll, Iowa, and Darrell was employed in the parts department at the Napa Auto Parts Store. In 1974, they moved to Sac City, Iowa, where they resided for the next 33 years and Darrell worked at Noble Manufacturing in the pallet shop and paint run. He later was employed as custodian at the Sac City High School and Loring Hospital from which he retired. Throughout their marriage, Darrell and MarvelAnn were foster parents for many children. In 1970, Lynne came into their lives when she was five years old, and was adopted into the family in 1975. In September of 2007, Darrell and MarvelAnn moved to Denison, Iowa, to be closer to family. MarvelAnn died April 24, 2008, and Darrell continued to make his home at the Denison Care Center following her death. In his spare time through the years, Darrell enjoyed trains, was a C.B. Radio Operator and enjoyed attending garage sales and auctions. While residing in Sac City he volunteered and helped with the Sing-A-Longs at the Parkview Care Center and they operated the PMF Auction House for a time. His greatest joy was spending time with his family and he was especially devoted to his grandchildren. Darrell died Wednesday, February 24, 2010, at Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa. At the time of his death he had been blessed with 85 years, 2 months and 2 days. Including his parents, Louis and Muriel Fryar, and his wife, MarvelAnn, Darrell was also preceded in death by one daughter, Lynne Fryar, one great granddaughter and two brothers, Russell and Earl Fryar. Those remaining to cherish his memory include: one daughter Roxanne and husband Pat O’Neill of O’Neill, Nebraska; son Brian and wife Joan Fryar of Denison; seven grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren; two sisters, Lois Maulsby of Rockwell City, Iowa, and Ann, and husband Ed Albers of Sac City, Iowa; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, February 27, 2010, at the Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison, Iowa, with Father Glenn Rankin officiating. Music for the service included instrumental selections of “How Great Thou Art” and “The Old Rugged Cross” and a recorded selection of “Angels Among Us”. Honorary pallbearers were the great grandchildren. Pallbearers included Jeremy Fryar, Matt Frank, Keri Fryar, Amanda Lapel, Toni Weber, Robyn Throckmorton, Ryan Throckmorton and Robert Throckmorton. Military Honors were provided by the V.F. W. Post 590, Sac City, Iowa. Interment was at the Oakland Cemetery in Sac City, Iowa. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home, www.pfannebecker.com , Denison, Iowa was in charge of arrangements.
