David John Behrens

David John Behrens, “Dave”, was born on June 11, 1950 to Orvis and Florence (Larsen) Behrens in Harlan, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Jacksonville, Iowa, where he remained a lifelong member.
On May 29, 1970, he was united in marriage to Hattie Jones in Washington, Iowa. They became parents to two children: Anthony and Julie.
In November of 1969, Dave enlisted in the United States Navy where he served as a Hospital Corpsman, Pharmacist, and a Hull Maintenance Technician where he learned to weld, aboard the USS Clark before transferring to the Navy Reserves where he spent the next sixteen years before retiring and returning to the Harlan area.
Dave wanted to see the country that he had served so he found himself a job where he could sit and look out of the window. . . he drove a semi truck for the next twenty-six years. He hated being away from his family, especially his grandchildren who were his whole world. He enjoyed going to their activities and being a part of their lives. He also loved watching movies with his little popcorn buddy, Megan.
He was admitted to Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska, where he died on Saturday, July 2, 2016, having attained the age of sixty-six years and twenty-one days. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers Richard and Keith.
He is survived by his wife of forty-six years, Hattie Behrens of Harlan, Iowa; son Anthony Behrens of Harlan; daughter Julie and her husband Rod Owens of Harlan; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; brother Lyle Behrens and his wife Connie of Harlan; sisters Betty Jacob and her husband Larry Parr of Plattsmouth, Nebraska and Peggy Behrens and her husband Bill Fewell of Lake View, Iowa; sisters-in-law: Maudie Behrens of Kingman, Arizona, Carolyn and Wayne Swank of Kismet, Kansas, Raquel Jones of Wilton, Iowa, Nancy Jarvis of Keokuk, Iowa, and Sue and Brad Hull of Elvaston, Illinois; brothers-in-law: Butch and Mona Vanderah of Shreveport, Louisiana, John and Brenda Jones of Little Rock, Arkansas, Robert and Stacy Jones of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Randy and Annie Jones of Wilton, Iowa, and Kevin and Kristine Jones of Ponchatoula, Louisiana; his favorite dog Sammy; many nieces and nephews; other family members and many friends.
