David Earl Burns was born December 31, 1937 to Earl and Hazel (Corman) Burns in Superior, Nebraska. He grew up in Jewell County, Kansas where he was confirmed at the Methodist Church and attended school in Esbon, Kansas graduating in 1955 from Esbon High School.
After graduation David worked construction and welding jobs until 1958 when he joined the United States National Guard, then enlisting in the United States Army, where he spent some time stationed in Germany. After his honorable discharge in 1960, he still did some construction and welding, and then worked for local farmers in Nebraska as a hired hand, and also drove a cattle truck. Throughout his years David worked for various trucking companies and in 1973 when the family moved to Avoca, Iowa he started working with Double “SS” Trucking Company.
In October of1960, David was united in marriage to Karen R. Ward in Nelson, Nebraska. They were blessed with six children - Lanette, Michelle, Teresa, Michael, Kristine and Sandy.
In 1978, David married Carolyn Shanno and they were blessed with a daughter, Tina. In April of 1985, David married Doris Vernon in Oakland, Iowa. He retired in 2001 and stayed in Oakland until becoming a resident at Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn, Iowa in September of 2013.
David enjoyed putting together model cars, trucks, trains and John Deere tractors. He was a big Green Bay Packer fan. He enjoyed watching a lot of different sports, old westerns, and keeping up on current events.
David passed away on Friday, March 18, 2016 at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa, having attained the age of seventy eight years, two months and eighteen days. In addition to his parents, David was preceded in death by his brother Robert Burns.
He is survived by his children: Lanette Peterson of Avoca, Iowa; Michelle and her husband Doug Heilig of Avoca, Iowa; Teresa and her husband Francis Jordan of Fort Madison, Iowa; Michael Burns and his wife Gwen of Wahiawa, Hawaii; Kristine and her husband Christopher Scholl of St. Louis, Missouri; Sandy and her husband Eugene Butcher, Jr. of Avoca, Iowa; and Tina Burns; fourteen grandchildren; two great grandchildren; his sister Karen and her husband Dick Witchly of Fort Worth, Texas; his brother Richard Burns and his wife Nita of Mankato, Kansas; his special friend Dorothy “Dottie” Johnson of Elk Horn, Iowa; step-children; step-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; other family members and many friends.
