David Arnold Christensen, son of Arnold and Helen (Havick) Christensen, was born on July 12, 1938, on his parent’s farm just west of Harlan, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church and attended school in Harlan. After his schooling David worked construction.
On June 16, 1963, David was united in marriage to Nancy Ann Montgomery at the Methodist church in Harlan. Two daughters were born to this union; Linda and Kimberly. After his marriage, David hauled milk, first grade B milk then later grade A milk in bulk tanks. He then began his own grain business where he bought, sold and hauled grain for various Shelby county farmers. David also worked for several years driving truck for Farm Service Co-op until his retirement due to his first battle with cancer.
He didn’t stay idle long and began driving truck again for Wynne Transportation. He then worked for a few years at the BP Amoco in Harlan before becoming the manager at the Shell Texaco station at the Lake Manawa exit in Council Bluffs this past two years. Even when he became ill with cancer a second time as well as heart difficulties, he refused to stop working even the last week of his life.
David was a kind and generous man who loved his wife, kids and grandkids. He devoted much of his life in support of the Masons. He was a member and held many offices of the Parian Lodge No. 321; Olivet Chapter No. 107; Adelphia Council No. 4; Mt. Zion Commandery No. 49 all of Harlan and the Abu Bekr Shrine Temple of Sioux City, Iowa. David was active at the Shelby County Speedway where he served as president and also at the Red Oak Raceway where he supervised the demolition derby and was a past member of the Harlan JayCees.
David died at his home in Harlan on August 8, 2009, having attained the age of seventy-one years and twenty-seven days. He was preceded in death by his parents. David is survived by his wife Nancy Christensen of Harlan, Iowa; his daughters Linda and her husband Mike Monahan also of Harlan and Kimberly and her husband Chad Gracey of Fremont, Nebraska; his three grandchildren: Brittany Monahan and Trevor and Tyler Gracey; his brother Robert Christensen and his wife Joanne of Harlan, Iowa; special friends Darryl and Rosa VanDyne of Cave Creek, Arizona; nieces and nephews other relatives and many friends.
Pastor Steven Chellew officiated the 2:00 PM funeral at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa, on Wednesday, August 12, 2009. Serving as casket bearers were Brian Christensen, Bruce Christensen, Ray Christensen, Leon Schmidt, Paul Stewart, Chad Montgomery, Rob Olsen, and Doug Olsen. Interment was held at the Harlan Cemetery in Harlan, Iowa
