Delmar “Del” Lynn Conrad, the son of Alvin and Delores (Bristol) Conrad was born on April 6, 1946 in Harlan, Iowa. He attended country school at Lincoln Township #4 in Harlan near his family’s farm until eighth grade then graduated from Harlan Community High School with the Class of 1964. Del excelled both academically and athletically in high school participating in four sports each year while maintaining an “A” average and also being elected President of the Senior Class. Upon graduation, he continued his education at the University of Iowa in Iowa City.
Del was one of those young men who proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War from 1969 to 1971. Due to his extensive and impressive education, he was selected for Officer’s Candidate School and served as a Captain in Vietnam. He was married to Karen McLaughlin for eighteen years and had three children: Tracy, Nathan, and Trevor.
After his term of military service ended, he continued his college education at three universities: Arkansas, Alabama and finished his Business Degree in Accounting at the University of Iowa in 1972. His business career began as a CPA with the accounting firm of McGladrey and Pullen in South Bend, Indiana. After seven years, he transferred to the Anaheim office of M&P in California and became a Partner in the firm. He later married Janette Ochoa in 1988. They lived in Fullerton, California for twenty-five years with their two children: Alex and Morgan.
Del retired his partnership with M&P and became an industry SEC compliance financial officer for businesses who were taking their companies public. For the last seven years, he was employed by the Willdan Group of Companies, an engineering firm in Anaheim as their Vice-President of Financial Reporting & Compliance. He enjoyed his career and continued working through his illness challenges until his death.
Del was an avid sports fan and loved his Lakers, Angels, Patriots and UCLA football. He enjoyed coaching and watching his children play sports. He was proud of all his children’s accomplishments.
He passed away at Kindred Hospital in Brea, California on July 10, 2013 after a long respiratory illness having attained the age of sixty-seven years, three months, and four days. His wife, Janette was at his side.
Del was preceded in death by his parents, sister Sue Swain, and brothers David and Mark. He is survived by his wife, Janette Conrad of Fullerton, California; his children: Tracy Taylor Weiking, Nathan Conrad and his wife Carrie, Trevor Conrad, Alex Conrad, and Morgan Conrad all of California; five grandchildren; his brother, Randy Conrad and his wife Sandy of Harlan, Iowa; nieces, nephews and many friends both in Iowa and California. Del will live in all of our hearts forever.
Pastor Donna Ewert officiated the 1:00 PM grave side service on Saturday, August 10, 2013 at the Harlan Cemetery in Harlan, Iowa. Serving as honorary casket bearers were Morgan Conrad, Alex Conrad, Nathan Conrad, Trevor Conrad, Randy Conrad, Rick Burchett, Doug Baker, and Bob Hoogenson. The Patriot Guard Riders of Iowa were in attendance. Military Rites were performed by Harlan American Legion Helmer Reyelt Post No. 150 and Shelby County VFW Post No. 941.
