Delno “ Bud” Holtz, son of Fred and Emma (Ingwersen) Holtz was born February 7, 1918 in rural Avoca, Iowa. He was one of eleven children born. He was baptized and confirmed at First Lutheran Church in Avoca. He attended country school and graduated from Avoca High School with the class of 1936.

After graduation, Bud helped his parents with the farm and dairy operation. When his parents retired and moved to town, Bud was employed to build bridges on the Rock Island Railroad in the Hancock-Minden area.

On October 24, 1953 Bud was united in marriage to Betty Scheel at First Trinity Lutheran Church in Avoca. They made their first home in a two-room apartment in Avoca for two and half years, during that time Bud drove a cream truck for Wilbert Sorensen and did carpentry work for Erik Malm and John Rethwesch. On March 1, 1956 they started farming on the Chris Miller farm south of Avoca. Bud did carpentry work during the day and farmed on evenings and weekends. In 1959, they moved northeast of Avoca to the Will Nieman farm and resided there for 24 years. Bud and Betty were blessed with three children: Jean, Keith and Connie. They raised corn, beans and hay. They also had a Grade B dairy herd, feeder calves, sheep, rabbits, broilers, laying hens, ducks, geese, turkeys, guinea hens and pigs (many, many pigs). Bud and Betty retired and moved to town in January of 1984.

After retirement, Bud worked as a custodian for the Edgington Memorial Park. He enjoyed gardening, fishing and going on extended bus tours. Bud loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grand children.

Bud died on Friday, November 16, 2018 at Avoca Specialty Care Center in Avoca attaining the age of one hundred years, nine months and nine days. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his siblings Ella Rock, Leona Jorgensen, Herb Holtz, Alvin Holtz, Evelyn Nelson, Raymond Holtz, Freddie Holtz, Clarence Holtz, Hazel Krueger and Frances Hodge.

Left to cherish his memory, his wife of 65 years Betty Holtz of Avoca, Iowa; children Jean and her husband Michael Kenkel of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Keith Holtz and his wife Nancy of Avoca, Iowa; Connie and her husband Dean Klein of Panama, Iowa; 7 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; other family and many friends.
