Delnoe Harvey Meredith was born on October 4, 1917 to Jobe and Tena (Jacobsen) Meredith in Shelby, Iowa. The family took in three other children during the flu epidemic of 1918: a niece, a nephew, and a girl off the orphan train. Red, as he was always called for the red hair he had as a kid, graduated from Shelby High School in 1935 during the height of the depression. Red started driving a truck for Elmer Kiesel while he was still in high school.
On November 23, 1940, he was united in marriage to Nine Camenisch in Council Bluffs, Iowa. To this union two children were born: a son Mick and a daughter Marilyn. After their marriage the couple resided in Shelby, Iowa. As part of the Greatest Generation, Red was one of the five men who left Shelby on Christmas Day in 1942 for World War II. He served in Pattons Third Army that at the end of the war, cleaned out the concentration camps in Germany. He earned three bronze battle stars. Upon returning from the war, he drove a truck for fifty years. He always figured he drove several million miles before retiring in 1984. He started out driving a 1933 Chevrolet straight truck and ended driving a 1983 Peterbuilt with a 65-foot long trailer.
Red enjoyed his kids, his grandchildren, and his great-grandchildren. He was a charter member of the American Legion Post 240 started in Shelby on March 12, 1946 and was a sixty-eight year member. He enjoyed eating (he ate corn flakes every day he was able), Coca Cola, playing cards (he cheated), going for a drive, a good tall tale, NASCAR, and laughing.
Red resided in Shelby, Iowa, most of his life until recently when he became a resident of Avoca Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Avoca, Iowa. He died at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa on March 2, 2009, having attained the age of ninety-one years, four months, and twenty-six days. In addition to his parents, Red was preceded in death by his wife Nina.
Survivors include his children: Mick Meredith and his wife Maggie of Omaha, Nebraska, Marilyn and her husband Frank Evans of Shelby, Iowa; three grandchildren: Andrew Evans, Allison and her husband Richard Maassen, and Joel Evans and his wife Erin; four great-grandchildren: Alyssa Engle, Olivia Maassen, Meredith Maassen, and Wyatt Evans; other family members and friends.
Pastor Orris Drake officiated a memorial service on Thursday, March 5, 2009. A private graveside service was held on Friday, March 6, 2009 at the Shelby Cemetery.
