DeLoris Ellen Lamp Sonnichsen, the daughter of Edward and Laura Friedrichsen Lamp, was born December 19, 1919, on a farm in Carroll County, Iowa. She received her education in a number of rural schools in Crawford County. Following her education she worked at home and helped in different homes when help was needed. She was baptized and confirmed February 20, 1938, at St. John Lutheran Church in Deloit, Iowa. On December 11, 1938, DeLoris was united in marriage with Walter Sonnichsen at the Zion Lutheran Parsonage in Denison, Iowa, and they made their home on a farm six miles west of Denison. To this union four children were born: Marlene, Mrs. Dennis Bergstadt of Denison, Robert, who worked in the Aurora, Colorado Police Department, Martin, a carpenter in Portland, Oregon, and Mary, Mrs. Brian Deamer, served in the United States Air Force prior to her death in 1998. In 1955, Walter and DeLoris and family moved to their acreage south of Denison where DeLoris was a homemaker, lovingly caring for her family. From 1973 until retiring in 1980, Walter and DeLoris were the custodians at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Due to failing health Walter entered Eventide in 1984 and DeLoris later moved into Denison. Walter died October 19, 1987 and DeLoris continued to make her home in Denison, moving to her apartment at Eventide Senior Housing in February of 1997 where she was a friend to all. In her spare time she enjoyed painting pictures, tending her flowers, taking in every stray cat she encountered and loved watching the wildlife on their acreage, especially the birds and squirrels. She will be remembered by her children and extended family members as the best cook there ever was. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison where she enjoyed her membership in the Dorcas Society and singing in the Adult Choir. DeLoris died Thursday afternoon, June 27, 2013, at Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa. At the time of her death she had been blessed with 93 years, 6 months and 8 days.
