Dennis Raymond Hansen was born at Denison, Iowa, December 29, 1946, the son of Raymond and Elvira Haase Hansen. He was received into God’s Kingdom of Grace through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison January 26, 1947, and confirmed in his Christian Faith there April 15, 1962. He was raised in Denison where he graduated from Denison High School with the class of 1965. He furthered his education at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls where he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in March of 1970. From July of 1970 until his honorable discharge in June of 1974, Dennis served his country in the United States Air Force. He was stationed at Hickman Air Force Base in Hawaii where he was an Inventory Management Specialist. Upon his discharge Dennis returned to Iowa and began his teaching career in the H-T-R Parochial School in Templeton, Iowa. He then taught in the Charter Oak-Ute Public Schools, Plattsmouth Middle School in Plattsmouth, Nebraska and Kayenta Public Schools in Kayenta, Arizona. From 1985 until 1989, Dennis took a break from teaching and was employed in retail at Grand Canyon National Park and Desert View Trading Post. He then returned to teaching for three years at Quartsize School District No. 4 in Ehrenberg, Arizona. In 1997 Dennis moved back to Denison and was employed as an Apartment Living Supervisor for Wesco Industries for two years. From 1999 until 2001 he was a teacher and counselor for the Sioux City Boys and Girls Home, Denison Day Treatment. In October of 2001 he began his employment with WinneVegas Casino at Sloan, Iowa, holding various positions, retiring from their Human Relations Department as a Trainer of new employees in 2010. During his years at the casino he made his home in Sloan and Onawa. In his spare time he enjoyed socializing with friends, playing cards, and was a great lover of cats. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. On April 26 of this year Dennis entered the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska, and it was there his death occurred early September 1, 2011. At the time of his death he had been blessed with 64 years, 8 months and 2 days. He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Elvira Hansen. Those remaining to cherish his memory include one sister, Mary Jane Watje of Denison, Iowa, three nephews and two nieces: Mike and wife, Jody Watje of Denison, Iowa, Jessica Watje and Theresa Watje of Omaha, Nebraska, Justin Watje of Buck Grove, Iowa and Jason Watje of Des Moines, Iowa, four great nieces and nephews, Kelsey, Jami and Andrew Watje of Denison, Iowa, and Malik Williams of Omaha, Nebraska, two aunts, Helen Haase and Adeline Koenck of Denison, Iowa, other relatives and friends. Memorial services were held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, September 16, 2011, at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa, with the Rev. Kurt R. Kaiser and the Rev. David M. Sewing officiating. Music for the service included the congregational hymns of “How Great Thou Art” and “On Eagles’ Wings” with Karen Kahl serving as organist. Military Honors were provided by the American Legion Post 8, Denison, Iowa. Inurnment was at Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Following the services all were invited to return to the church and join the family for fellowship and refreshments.
