Derald William Schuning, the son of Orvel and Margaret (Ehlers) Schuning was born on February 5, 1929 in Minden, Iowa. They lived on a farm until Derald was eight years old when they moved into Minden. Derald was baptized and confirmed in the old Minden Congregational Church. He attended country school and then Minden High school and graduated in 1947. He played basketball for Minden High School and was "Athlete of the Year." Derald also played basketball on a Minden Town Team after graduation. While in school he always walked out to his Grandfather Schuning's farm to help on the weekends. Farming was his first love and he bought a used tractor, plow and two row corn picker so he could custom work around the area. He also baled hay for many farmers. His love of farming never left him.
Derald spent many hours watching his grandchildren play sports. He attended many football games, basketball and volleyball games and his grandchildren would only need to look up in the bleachers to see their grandpa there. He also loved to listen to his granddaughter, Jessica sing. Lately his most favorite sport was stock car racing. He attended many races every Saturday night with his daughter Marilyn and had a favorite driver in every race. His favorite NASCAR driver was Jeff Gordon.
Derald was united in marriage to Darlene Elsie Lubbe on February 5, 1951 in the Minden Congregational Church. They started farming on Rev. John Frieboes's farm west of Oakland. After that, they lived in Carson, Treynor and Persia areas before moving to Harlan in 1996. To this union three children were born. Derald was a seed corn salesman and supervisor for forty-four years making many friends whom he cherished. He and his wife and children raised many hogs over the years and saw many changes in the livestock business. Derald and his children enjoyed riding horses and rode in many area parades and trail rides.
Derald died on Friday, February 23, 2007 at the Little Flower Nursing Home in Earling, Iowa having attained the age of seventy-eight years and nineteen days. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister Ramona Kardell.
Survivors include his wife, Darlene of Harlan; his children: Richard Schuning and his wife Dyan of Neola, Iowa; Diane and her husband Calvin Nielsen of Harlan, Iowa and Marilyn and her husband Pat McKeighan of Council Bluffs, Iowa; nine grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; one sister Sharon and her husband Virgil Hoff of Fountain, Colorado; a sister-in-law Velma Lubbe of Harlan, Iowa and a brother-in-law George Kardell of Dallas, Texas; many nieces, nephews other relatives and many friends.
Funeral Services were held on Tuesday, February 27, 2007 at 2:00 PM at the Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Avoca, Iowa with Pastor Brian Wohlhuter as the clergy. Serving as honorary casket bearers were Ron Barrier, Charlie Malone, Larry Ehlers, Doug Kunze, Monte Schechinger and Randy Miller. Serving as casket bearers were Todd Hansen, Blake Cooper, Justin Miller, Raymond Freese, Chad Hansen and Lanny Newland. Interment was held in the Minden Cemetery, Minden, Iowa.
