Dewey Ernest Hansen, the son of Ernest and Mamie Ingwers Hansen, was born on November 28, 1918 in Fairview Township, Shelby County, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed in the First Lutheran Church in Avoca, Iowa. Dewey attended country school Fairview Township School #1.
On September 19, 1945, Dewey was united in marriage to Alta Berniece Hamdorf in Council Bluffs, Iowa. To this union four children were born. After their marriage they resided on the home place east of Corley where they were engaged in farming. Dewey enjoyed farming all of his life, the stock car races, fishing and going to dances in Corley and Avoca.
Dewey died at his home, that he has lived on since he was three months old, east of Corley on Wednesday, January 24, 2007 having attained the age of eighty-eight years, one month and twenty-seven days. He is preceded in death by his parents; his sister Alvina Jacobsen; brother Walter Hansen; one granddaughter, Amanda Dexter and one step grandson, Tylor Toyne.
He is survived by his wife, Alta of Harlan, Iowa; his children: James Hansen and his wife Karen of Walnut, Iowa; Vernon Hansen and his wife Lisa Martin-Hansen of Tucker, Georgia; Darrell Hansen and his wife Lana of Harlan, Iowa and Nadine and her husband Nathan Dexter of Casper, Wyoming; twelve grandchildren; six great grandchildren; sister Hazel and her husband Howard Schnieder of Avoca, Iowa and a sister-in-law Alverta Hansen of Audubon, Iowa; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Services were held on Saturday, January 27, 2007 at 1:30 PM at the Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Avoca, Iowa with Pastor Dennis Reich as the clergy. Serving as pall bearers were Kevin Hansen, Nathan Hansen, Clayton Dexter, Dustin Hansen, Philip Hansen and Ethan Dexter. Serving as Honorary Bearers were Tiffany Siffring, Leland Dexter, Alycia Hansen, Spenser Dexter, Jade Hansen and Maxwell Hansen. Interment was held in the Graceland Cemetery, Avoca, Iowa.
