Dian Mary Sonderman, daughter of Ambrose and Margaret (Brinks) Klocke, was born on September 20, 1946 in Carroll, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at Sacred Heart Catholic Church and attended Sacred Heart Catholic School through the eighth grade in Templeton, Iowa. Dian then attended Carroll Kuemper Catholic High School in Carroll, Iowa where she graduated with the class of 1963. After high school, she worked at a grocery store in Carroll.
After meeting at a dance at the Five Mile House, Dian began dating George Sonderman of Defiance, Iowa. On June 7, 1969, they were united in marriage at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Templeton. They then made their home for a few years in Defiance before moving to a farm outside of Defiance where they raised their four children: Tammy, Troy, Heidi and Holly.
Having been raised on her family’s farm, Dian was a small but mighty, hard working farm wife who enjoyed working side by side with George. She was a long time member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Defiance and was active with the ladies guild. She was a loving wife and mother who instilled the importance of her Catholic faith into her children and grandchildren. She also ran a daycare out of her home on the farm.
Dian was a great cook and insisted on always cooking a full course meal complete with homemade dessert. She was also a great seamstress and was able to alter any clothing item for her family. Summer months were always her favorite, when she could enjoy her flower gardens and when the finches would visit. She enjoyed shopping, reading, playing Hand and Foot card games with ladies card group and even a little gambling now and then. She also loved spending time with her family and always insisted on taking a family vacation every summer.
Dian died at the Jennie Edmundson Methodist Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa on March 25, 2019 having attained the age of seventy-two years six months and five days.
