Dixie Irene Andersen, daughter of Lafe and Myrtle Belle (McMurphy) Fairchild, was born November 1, 1933 in Audubon, Iowa. She attended Audubon High School. Dixie was a longtime member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Irwin, and was a member of the Lutheran Women’s Circle.
Dixie married Donald Dean Andersen on March 4, 1950 in Audubon, Iowa and to this union, three daughters were born: Donna, Denise, and Danita. They moved to Irwin in 1957 and that is where Dixie lived until 2015 when she moved to the Elm Crest apartments in Harlan.
Dixie worked as a Nurses Aid at Myrtue Medical Center for about 15 years, then worked as a Home Health Aid for Shelby County for 5 years. She then became an Income Maintenance Worker for the Department of Health and Human Services for over 15 years, retiring from that job in 1995.
Dixie’s hobby time was spent with her sisters, as they all enjoyed quilting and going on craft outings together. They made hundreds of quilts over the years, donating them to various homeless shelters, nursing homes, and the Denison Job Corps. Dixie loved craft fairs and often had a booth to sell her crafted blankets, quilts, shirts, and jewelry. She was passionate about helping others, and in addition to donating her time and quilts, she helped with fund raising for several events. Dixie volunteered at the Irwin Library, helped them get grants, and was on the board there. She also enjoyed gardening and canning. Dixie and Donald loved going camping and fishing together. Most of all, she loved spending time with her family, especially her grandkids and great-grandkids.
Dixie died on October 19, 2017 in Harlan, Iowa, attaining the age of 83 years, 11 months, and 18 days. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband Donald Andersen; sisters Leona Erb, Leola Baker, Ramona Peterson, Norene Pietanze; and grandson Christopher Finken.
