Don Herbst
January 6, 1946 — July 23, 2014
Donald Lee Herbst, son of Elmer and Agnes (Stessman) Herbst, was born January 6th, 1946 in rural Panama, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary’s of the Assumption Catholic Church in Panama. Don attended country school at Washington Township No. 4 near Panama and later St. Mary’s Catholic School in Panama. Don grew up as a farm boy in the Panama area.
On November 26th, 1963, Don was united in marriage to Shirley M. Foxhoven at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Earling, Iowa. The marriage was blessed with three children: Richard “Rick”, Dean and Katherine “Kathy.” The family lived near Buck Grove, Iowa; Shelby, Iowa where he raised his family and in 1992 they settled to the present farm near Earling. Don was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Earling. Throughout the years, Don was employed at Iowa Beef in Denison, Iowa; Harlan Manufacturing, Western Iowa Pork and Proliant in Harlan, Iowa, in addition to being a full time farmer.
Don was a hard working man and generous in sharing his time and talents with friends and family. He instilled a strong work ethic, sense of honesty and responsibility in his children and grandchildren. He had great love for and pride in his family and attended their many school and sporting events.
Don died on July 23, 2014 having attained the age of sixty-eight years, six months and seventeen days. In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Megan Klein. He is survived by his wife Shirley Herbst of Earling, Iowa; children Rick Herbst of Harlan, Iowa, Dean and his wife Chris Herbst of Shelby, Iowa and Kathy and her husband Nick Klein of Marion, Iowa; grandchildren Beth Herbst, Brittany Herbst, Michael Stein, Joshua Herbst, Kelsi Herbst, Nathan Herbst, Benjamin Klein and Thomas Klein. Siblings Jan Theulen, Diane Dermody, Carol Mickels, Dan Herbst, Jean Heese, Bill Herbst, Peg Shawver, Ted Herbst, Jim Herbst and many other family and friends.
