Donald Dean Andersen, son of Francis Andersen and Elsie Brix, was born on August 17, 1932 in Harlan, Iowa. He grew up in Harlan and graduated from Harlan High School.
On December 23, 1953, Donald was united in marriage to Clarice Axland at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Irwin, Iowa. From this union two children were born: Marsha and Richard.
Donald served in the United States Armed Forces during the Korean War. Donald was a hardworking man of great character. He loved woodworking, polka music, playing cards and spending time with his family. He was a lifelong member of the Shelby County Fair Board and Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan, Iowa. He was inducted into the Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame. Don and Clarice volunteered in the ELCA Mission Builders organization. Over 9 years they helped build 9 church buildings across the United States.
He spent most of his time working for Moorman’s Feed as a feed salesman. After volunteering for Mission Builders he worked part-time for Bruce’s Appliance until his final retirement in January 2018.
Donald died on Wednesday, July 4, 2018 at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa attaining the age of eighty-five years, ten months and seventeen days. In addition to his parents, Donald was preceded in death by his sister Gloria Mills.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Clarice (Axland) Andersen of Harlan, Iowa; his children Marsha and her husband Kent Larson of Las Vegas, Nevada; Richard Andersen and his wife Laura of Jackson, Wisconsin; brother Lowell Andersen of Harlan, Iowa; two grandchildren: Steven Larson of Las Vegas, Nevada and Allison LaRue of Germantown, Tennessee and six great-grandchildren; many other family and friends.
